bmlmpc
I bought a stick of 512 PC2700 Corsair XMS from PC MicroCenter about 2 to 3 weeks ago and about 2 to 3 days ago my computer would spontaneously reboot while in the middle of unrelated tasks(gaming, browsing the web, listening to music). Finally today it did it and it through up a blue screen with an error message. It says to check my hardware but i havent installed any new hardware other than the memory. Ill type in what it said because i cant post the picture i took: "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps: Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advance Startup Options, and then select safe mode. Technical information: ***STOP: 0x00000001 (0xFC0AEC0C, 0x0000002, 0x00000000, 0xF40AC9AA)" Anyways I was curious if you guys had any insight. Thanks! bmlmpc
Can you tell me the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set? Sure thing. MoBo - Asus A7V8X i believe the FSB on the board is 233Mhz Processor - AMD AthlonXP 2400+ The only bios setting i have touched is the "Optimal/Turbo" setting. I set it to turbo when i built the thing. If you need more specific info let me know. Thanks! Brian

bmlmpc
Boy RAM GUY do I have a funny story for you. I went ahead and downloaded memtest86 and thought id run it against my computer the way it sits. I start it up and went and got my hair cut. I come back and i notice that it is 31% done and it has found some 1,512,293 failures. I know I had to double check the number myself. I figure ok well maybe its the way i have my settings in BIOS. So i hit escape(to reboot) and wouldnt you know it, windows wouldnt start. I keep resetting the computer when finally i get this message, "Windows could not be started because your windows/system32/ntfs.sys file is missing or corrupted insert your windows CD and choose 'r' to repair." Or something of that nature. Well that wouldnt have been so bad but when i tried to repair my windows the setup hangs up when it loads Kernel Debugger DLL. I tried it 4 times befor I gave up. HAHAHA...so here i am at a school computer. Think its time for a format? Good luck with this one RAM GUY. Brian EDIT: You dont think a virus of some sort could be behind this? EDIT2: Do you still want me to test your bios settings when i get the chance?

bmlmpc
On the computer? I just ran it as it was. Im sure most of that stuff is on Auto or whatever. What kind of numbers are you looking for? If you give me a day or so ill get the exact numbers for you. On the memtest? I just ran it without changing anything. If you need numbers on that ill get them for you. Thanks for helpin me out RAM GUY. Brian
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 17, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 17, 2005 Please set the settings I gave you. If you just run the default settings it may run the memory at DDR400 and with the CPU you have that may be the reason you are getting errors. bmlmpc
I plugged in the settings you listed, or at least the ones i could find(i got most of them) and ran memtest86. It made it through 1 and half passes before i had to leave for class, it is still running however. It hadnt picked up any errors so i think you may have fixed it. You think it might be able to load windows setup now so i can repair windows, or at least format and reload for that matter? One last question is there anywhere i can go to get info on setting up memory? In case I decide to buy more ram? Thanks a ton!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 17, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 17, 2005 Please let me know, but if it gets through a few passes of memtest with no errors it should be fine!
bmlmpc
Well i ran memtest on it while i was at school and it made 10 passes without any errors so id say we are good. Didnt even have to use the repair CD for windows which i found odd. Anyways thanks a ton RAM GUY, your the best! Brian

bmlmpc
Well my computer crashed again while i was playing Halflife 2. It through up a blue screen, i took a picture of it and i can write it out for you. I ran memtest86 again and it immediately started throwing up errors. It then would not load windows. I went in and reset all the defaults in bios and it booted and loaded windows, which brings me to this point. You got any ideas? Brian
