shfrey
I recently built the system described below. I have 2 matched Corsair CMX512-3200C2PRO DIMMs. When both of them are installed, I get frequent blue screen crashes or random reboots (without warning). When only 1 module is installed, no problems. I also tried running the system with 768 MB of DDR333 memory - (1 512MB + 1 256MB DIMM) and there were no problems. Also, if I run the Windows Memory Diagnostic utility - with both DDR400 modules installed, it fails the Stride6 test. With one module installed, no failures, with the DDR333 modules installed, no failures. Is my motherboard defective? Thanks, Scott Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe MB Athlon XP 2200 (barton) 1GB RAM - Corsair CMX512-3200C2PRO Radeon 9000 pro 128 MB AGP video card Western Digital Raptor 74GB SATA hard drive
shfrey
Oh - I should add that the reason I don't suspect the memory is because the Corsair DIMMs are the second set of DDR400 DIMMs that I've tried, with the same results. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 8, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 8, 2005 Can you tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set?
shfrey
Can you tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set? one thing first - i noticed I gave the wrong part number for the RAM - it is actually TWINX1024-3200C2PRO, if that makes a difference ok, BIOS settings - let me if I missed anything: CPU external frequency: 200 MHZ Cpu Frequency Multiple Setting: AUTO [greyed out] CPU Frequency Multiple: 11.0x System Performance: OPTIMAL [greyed out] CPU Interface: OPTIMAL Memory Frequency: AUTO [greyed out] Resulting Frequency: AUTO [greyed out] Memory timing: OPTIMAL [greyed out] SDRAM Active Precharge Delay: 8 [greyed out] SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay: 3 [greyed out] SDRAM RAS Precharge Delay: 3 [greyed out] SDRAM CAS Latency: 3T FSB Spread Spectrum: 0.5% AGP Spread Spectrum: DISABLED CPU Vcore Setting: AUTO [greyed out] CPU Vcore: 1.650 V Graphics Aperture Size: 128 MB I don't think I've changed any 'performance settings' - I'm not overclocking or anything like that, if that's what you mean. Thanks a lot, Scott
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 9, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 9, 2005 Please try and set the FSB Jumper to pins 2-3 and then clear the bios and leave the modules in slots 2-3 with the latest bios, 1.013 or newer and then when you turn it back on go to bios setup and set these setting after you load setup defaults: CPU external frequency: 200 MHZ Cpu Frequency Multiple Setting: AUTO [greyed out] CPU Frequency Multiple: 11.0x System Performance: User Define [greyed out] CPU Interface: OPTIMAL Memory Frequency: 100% [greyed out] Resulting Frequency: 200 MHz Memory timing: User Define SDRAM Active Precharge Delay: 8 SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay: 3 SDRAM RAS Precharge Delay: 3 SDRAM CAS Latency: 3T FSB Spread Spectrum: 0.5% AGP Spread Spectrum: DISABLED CPU Vcore Setting: AUTO CPU Vcore: 1.650 V DDR Reference voltage: 2.7 Volts Graphics Aperture Size: 128 MB
shfrey
Ok, I tried that and.... same problem... argh... god forbid Asus would ever return my phone call. thanks for your help. Any other ideas? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 10, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 10, 2005 Have you tried the modules one at a time to make sure its not a bad module? And do you have another system you could use to test the modules with? At any rate I have no problem replacing your modules, but I would try them one up to make sure its not some other problem. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!
shfrey
yes - i have tried the modules one at a time and there are no problems with either one. i do suspect the motherboard or some bios settings as I have seen the exact same problem with 2 different pairs of memory chips. shfrey
ok, i finally got ahold of Asus and they seem to have fixed it - I'll post the fix in case anyone else needs it - they had me set SDRAM Active Precharge Delay: 6 SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay: 3 SDRAM RAS Precharge Delay: 3 SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5 everything else was the same as what you told me to do and this seems to have fixed it. Thanks again for your help... Wired
Well, those ARE the recommended timings, so that's good, but it's odd that more relaxed timings caused the problem!
thebody78
I have this same motherboard and for a long time i had the same exact problem with my memory that you had. I thought that it was because i bought a house brand memory and not some good stuff. I haven't had a chance to try this fix yet. But atleast i know its not the memory and its the bios settings. I still plan on buying the same memory that you have for an upgrade to 2g from 1g.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 6, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 6, 2005 Well I did post the settings that you should use early on in this thread. And if you go to 2 Gig you would want to use 1-Twinx2048-3200C2 for best performance.
