Felessan
Hi, My computer crashes totally randomly when I have dual-channel running. I've tried a few things in the BIOS, but nothing worked. Interestingly, I just got another stick--this time a single CMX512-3200--and it works perfectly in dual-channel mode with only ONE of the 256's in, but not both. Also, I noticed that one of the 256's works a lot smoother than the other in conjunction with the 512. The 512 has been in every slot at one time or another...no change. So two 256's--or one 512 and two 256's--causes crashes. Anything else does not. Here's my system: AMD Athlon XP 3000+ (400 FSB) ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe (Rev 1.01) Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9 200GB ATA / 133 HDD TWINX CMX256A-3200 (8 3 3 3) CMX512-3200 (8 3 3 3) RADEON 9600 Pro 256MB Thanks for your time! -TB
jsteel44
Sure that the 512 and 256 are in Dual channel mode? Unless things have changed (haven't made socket A systems in a bit) then you'd need at least 2 256 and 1 512 in the appropiate slots for Dual channel mode to be enabled, or 2 256 in the appropiate slots or 2 512 in appropiate slots etc.. but 1 512 and 1 256 can't do DC mode. Felessan
I'm definetly sure. One of the first things on my screen when I boot up is the "Dual Channel, 200MHz" message. It switches to "Single Channel" when I have one stick or two sticks in slots 1 and 2. All three sticks in is apparently unchangeably dual-channel... or i'd turn dual channel off, because it works great in single-channel mode. Also, it doesn't matter where the 512 is, if there are at least two modules and one is in slot 3 then I'm in dual channel. I read, on the corsair website, that they test my type of memory on an ASUS A7N8X (not deluxe)... I considered trying that out until I discovered that one of my 256's doesn't work as well as the other. -TB
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 2, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 2, 2005 Please make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your MB and that you have the 512MB installed on DIMM slot 1 and the 2*256MB on DIMM 2&3; load Setup/Optimized default settings, and try the following BIOS settings; TwinX1024 or TwinX512-3200 CPU Freq: 200MHz (400 FSB) System Performance: User Define Memory Frequency: 100% Resulting Frequency: 200 MHz (400 FSB) Memory Timing: User Define SDRAM CAS Latency: 3T SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 8T DDR Reference Voltage: 2.7 Volts AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!* All other settings are motherboards defaults Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure!
Felessan
I've tried all of that :). Memtest never gave any errors, the i've played with all the settings--including those you suggested--still nothing stopped the crashing. The only thing I noticed was the decreased performance with one of the pair of twinx 256. Either that, or my motherboard can't handle DDR because of some defect. I'm going to test that this weekend with some other RAM that has proved itself. Any other suggestions? Thanks for reading. -TB
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 3, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 3, 2005 Actually put the 512MB to the one that is farthest away from the CPU, and the 256MB on the first black and middle blue slot. See if this shows dual channel.
Felessan
It does show dual channel. EVEREST shows that as DIMM 1 for the 512. Dual channel is on when using three sticks--no matter the combination. Unfortunately, it crashes no matter what combination I use. If my bios says I'm in dual channel, I can hope for a crash. Still haven't tried another matched pair of memory. My friend has a TWINX512-3200C2PT--A pair of matched 256's. That'll happen on Friday. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 4, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 4, 2005 Please let us know how you make out; the recommended settings for the 3200C2's are 2.5/3/3/6, with 2.7 volts voltage settings.
Felessan
Had the C2PT ram in for a day, no problems yet. They're in slots 1 and 3.

Felessan
Yeah, that's all great, but I have $300 worth of RAM that I can't use now. I don't even own the 3200C2's--I have to give them back. Can I send in my 2 256's and 1 512 to exchange for the 3200C2's? I've had the 256's for about a year, and the 512 for about two months, and just lived with the problem--until now. So I can't send them back to the manufacturer, but your website said it should work with my motherboard. The different version even costs exactly the same. Thanks, -TB Glad to hear everything is working as it should be!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 10, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 10, 2005 You can try and request it to our RMA department to get your 2*256MB replaced with a 512MB, but as far as replacing the 3200 modules with 3200C2, I do not think that this will be possible. Felessan
Okay, let's try it, something different is better than crashing. You can try and request it to our RMA department to get your 2*256MB replaced with a 512MB, but as far as replacing the 3200 modules with 3200C2, I do not think that this will be possible.
