wale
My MSI KT3 Ultra 2 was running fine with 2 x 256 MB Infineon PC2100 DIMMs for more then 2 years. Recently I wanted to upgrade it to 1 GB, and to not mix up different types of RAM I decided to completely replace it by 2 x 512 MB Corsair PC3200 DIMMs which where recommended at the Corsair homepage ( Corsair Compatibility List ). The new RAM runs fine - but only individually. As soon as I use them together my OS wont boot up. I tried almost all possible combinations of the memory slots and BIOS RAM settings, I also tried to increase the RAM voltage - nothing worked. I tested the DIMMs individually with Memtest - no problems. In combination I got a lot of errors in Test 5. Is there a way to get both DIMMs to work together - some special settings I am not aware of? If not - would any other PC3200 RAM work (it's quite hard nowadays to get slower RAM)? Or should I try to get 1 1024 MB DIMM? Or does the KT3 Ultra 2 only work with PC2700? Thank you in advance Walter
wale
Sorry, forgot to mention the exact RAM model - I own 2 VS512MB400. And I am using the latest BIOS 5.7. If you need any other information that is relevant please tell me! Cheers Walter
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 25, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 25, 2005 Please install the modules in slots 1-3 and then go to bios setup and load setup defaults and set the memory Frequency at 1-1 so its in sync with your CPU. Then test the system with http://www.memtest.org to be sure!
wale
In the meantime I got a reply from the MSI support where I asked the same question - but they were very "helpful" and just stated that my board is not specified for PC 3200 RAM ... I also did what you suggested (running the RAM at 133 MH in slots 1 and 3) - but still no success (although the boot process proceeded a bit further). Memtest showed errors in test 8 this time. Then I increased additionally the DDR voltage to 2.8 V - and suddenly it worked! But ... :(: Then I got weired crashes, and at one stage my PC didn't boot anymore at all. After returning to the old Infineon DIMMs everything is fine again. So I guess all I can do is to try to return the RAM and get some slower. I am just wondering why that Corsair page recommended the VS512MB400 ... Walter
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 27, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 27, 2005 Our Value Select would be backwards compatible and this MB has over clocked in the past. But I hove no problem replacing your modules if you want to try that! Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!
