K95 Platinum Wrist Rest - Bad quality

Catalonia

Recommended Posts

After several days I decided to remove the Wrist Rest and try to use the Keyboard without it. It is just TOO UGLY to fit on my RIG.

It looks obviouslly better, but is very, VERY unconfortable...

I would love to find out if any other Corsair (hard plastic) wrist rest have the same connectors then the K95 Platinum so I can use it with mine.

Have you tried the other side to see if it is more comfortable?

Yes, I have. But it's actually not about being uncomfortable (which it isn't) but about it's look. This soft plastic looks way dirtier than if it was hard plastic like the K70's are.

Unfortunately, the K95 Platinum wrist rest is one of its kind. K70 and STRAFE wrist rest will not fit the K95's, the specs are different.

I've had mine for 2 months now and the wrist rest looks the same from the day I opened the box. I am using the textured side, it seems fine to me.

Hello, and thanks for the answer.

Well, my experience has been this bad. Maybe is the humidity of the are I'm living (facing the Mediterranean)...

As I said before, this keyboard looks really nice in fact that's why I bough it, and is comfortable, very comfortable, (Macro keys still stop working now and then, and CUE is the typical mess as always).

But I definitely prefer the hard/plastic wrist rest from other versions. IO really hope Corsair stop experimenting with this, and the K95 is the last keyboard with this material. Really...

The K95 platinum handrest is unique and worse, it is NOT for sale on its own. Ever since I owned my first k90, I have always tried to buy one or two replacements because the plastic parts that attached the keyboard to the wrist rest crack VERY easily. Unfortunately, Corsair doesn't sell them separately.

Sure enough, I had one crack and had to send the whole keyboard back as an RMA JUST to replace the wrist rest. Talk about a waste of money for Corsair. I'm not sure how hard it would be to offer not only the wrist rest but the rubber portion as well.

As for cleaning when you run your hands over the rubber, it generates electric static which is a magnet for dust. One way you can help this is wipe it down with a microfiber cloth in alcohol to help with the oil stains and use a dryer sheet over it when you are done. Lightly rub it across the area to destatic it. :)

I suppose Corsair will have to add this to the checklists of things to improve upon the k95 platinum's successor model:

-) Wristrest with plastic surface (like the one on the K70)

-) More robust attachment of the wristrest

-) Cherry MX Silent switches would be nice

-) Various bugfixes

And that's pretty much it already.

Main reason why I haven't gotten myself the k95 platinum RGB yet are the wrist rest and the lack of MxSilents. Hell, if they just produced an MxSilent version of the current k95 platinum and seperately sold a plastic version of the wristrest, I'd buy it RIGHT NOW

I'm really surprised not many keyboard manufacturers haven't gone to magnets to attach wrist rest or a hardened rubber that is at least flexible. Those plastic clips break so easily. :( Still Corsair really needs to offer the K95 RGB Platinum wrist rest separately. I've already broke one and I'm sure i'll break another and I don't want to have to send my whole keyboard back... :(

I think it's really nonsensical for you to be blaming Corsair for your keyboard getting dirty. It's not that hard to clean it, one simple wet wipe and you're done. The keyboard is amazing and the wrist rest is top notch! Things get dirty, it's normal, your other wrist wrest on the k70 also got dirty, just that you can't see it!! This is a good incentive for you to wipe your stuff.

The day I opened the K95 I already knew the rubberized wrist rest would eventually get grimmy and sticky over time – I think that's just the nature of some rubberized textures. I can't blame Corsair for the choice of material here because I know rubberized textures are very popular with HIDs. Fortunately, I'm glad Corsair at least designed the wrist rest panel so that it could be removed and replaced.

A few weeks ago, I decided to do a little DIY upgrade on the wrist rest panel. A close friend of mine makes leather goods as a hobby and he had some scrap leather lying around. I went over to his place and cut a piece that was the same size as the rubber panel. Then using some double-sided tape and glue, I affixed the leather piece into the plastic wrist rest bar. Check out these photos:

I've used it for a couple weeks now and it feels awesome. I expect the leather will only get smoother and age nicely over time with use.

This is actually a good idea. I'm not sure I would have used any glue, but some sort of adhesive was probably necessary as you couldn't necessarily control the thickness easily. Being leather it will change colours with the oils from your skin and should get softer. If you use leather cleaner you can keep it looking pristine but I still think the oils in your hands you will still find discolouring or shiny issues. Anything that can absorb an oil will do so. You can slow this down by treating the leather tho.:) I bet it feels better than rubber tho.

I do wish Corsair would allow us to buy replacement wrist rests. Still you could make a few bux by cutting 10-20 of these things, adding some double sided tape and sell them to K95 platinum owners. I know I would take one if the price was right + shipping to Canada. :)

That is a good idea above and it looks nice. My original K95P Speed's wrist wrest is showing some characteristic wear from the last year. I got another K95P Brown last month and immediately put on the brand new wrist rest. I took it off and put the old one on within 20 minutes. It didn't feel right. Too slick. Those of you lamenting your loss of shine, go find some Armor All.

I used double-sided tape to line the bottom of the plastic wrist rest so that I wouldn't permanently glue the leather to the actual board. I think some simple leather cleaner should definitely maintain it pretty well. My friend says this is pretty high quality leather usually for expensive leather shoes so it ages well. It has a smooth shiny finish on it so it doesn't seem to be as absorbing as other leathers. It's also black so any discoloring might not be as bad.

In terms of making more of these, I appreciate the interest! I'll have to ask my friend if he would be willing to spare more scrap pieces. Curious to know though, how much would you be willing to pay?

Honestly haven't been giving it a lot of thought. My father used to work with leather and the strip you used easily would have been one of his 'scraps', so much of it would depend on are we getting scraps from another project or some fresh leather made specifically for this purpose? Also depends on the type of leather used as well, you said premium but it has been a very long time since i looked at or priced kangaroo or cow leather. Finally it depends on the amount of work you put into it. If you are just cutting it to size and giving some double sided tape, then really we are paying for leather, a cut or two, shipping and convenience. So honestly for something that is going to last a bit, 20-40 bux depending on the quality of leather?

Haha good to know. Yeah I believe the leather is from Horween although I don't know what type it is. I chatted with my friend about it and he says it probably isn't worth the effort :[pouts:. But hopefully I've at least given a few people here some ideas/inspiration!
