RAM question

Recommended Posts

I'm rebuilding an older rig of mine for HTPC use. It currently has 8GB of this RAM installed:

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 Desktop Memory Model CMP8GX3M2B1333C9

This memory has been discontinued and going for insane prices.

This is the closest equivalent:

CORSAIR DOMINATOR 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMP8GX3M2A1600C9

The timings appear to be the same. Will the DDR3 1600 automatically downclock itself to match the already installed DDR3 1333 and run "unganged" as my motherboard refers to it?

Since no one showed any interest here (as per protocol) I wanted to report back my findings as it may help someone else.

I installed the 1600MHz RAM alongside my existing 1333MHz modules and I'm happy to report that my system is stable and all four modules are running in dual channel, "unganged" mode as intended.

Being apprehensive of mixing two different sets of modules of different speeds and manufacture dates, I had initially decided on just swapping out the slower modules for the faster pair and moving on. I really wanted a full 16GB of RAM, however, so I said to hell with it and used them all. My RAM speed was already set to 1333MHz in the BIOS, so she booted right up and has worked fine since installation.

Ran Windows Memory diagnostic in Extended mode, Cinebench, PCMark and played various games with no issues. This is an old rig re-purposed as an HTPC, so I can afford to experiment a little.
