Strafe, ambient lighting + type lighting

I want to get all the keys 50% brightness, then when pressed 100% and fade back to 50%. #1 is this possible on non-rgb red, and #2 if so how do I do it?

Set a the background to red but at 50%. Add a layer of type lighting (key) on top. It wont fade back to 50%. But if you added 3 layers of type lighting with different duration it should kind of work.

Just use a background layer with red 50% and a typing effect layer with Gradient red 100% to 0%, start on pressed key, stop after 1 time. ;):
