Memory Timings for A8V with TWINX1024-3200LLPT & 2 x CMX256A-3200LLPT

Hi Ram GUY,

I just assembled an ASUS A8V-Deluxe with Corsair TWINX1024-3200LLPT in DDR1 & DDR3, two sticks of CMX256A-3200LLPT in DDR2 & DDR4 (the two sticks idential revision, etc but not twinx). Two questions:

1) On boot up, the memory shows as 1536MB and I also see "Dual Channel DDR RAM 128 Bit mode" as it is booting. I assume this means I have dual channel setup correctly. I was under the assumption that ALL sticks have to be of identical SIZE as well and in my case they aren't all identical sized. Is my dual channel enabled?

2) Could you suggest the detailed memory timing settings in the BIOS. Currently everything is set to AUTO. Should I leave it auto? Does it matter only when overclocking? I might want to overclock at some point so I guess specific settings will not hurt. If this has already been addressed in another forum, please point me to it as I was not able to find it in the search. I've also never run memtest before. I assume I need to run this after I make these changes.

Thank you.

Regards,

Sam

Nope, you've got it setup to run in dual-channel and apparently have it working just fine. The modules in the paired DIMM slots have to be nearly identical, but not identical to those of a non-paired DIMM slot (I.E. your setup).

The problem arrises here in that there are no specific settings for four modules. Corsair only tests up to two modules (TwinX) at a time for any giving settings!

However, with your modules, you can always just play around a bit and see what they'll do.

First off, I'd set my DDR Voltage (VDimm) to 2.8 or 2.85 volts, then see if I couldn't get these settings to work (IN BIOS):

CAS: 2.5T

RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3

Row Precharge (tRP): 3

Cycle Time (tRAS): 7

Command Rate: 1T

If you can get that to run w/out errors (run Memtest86+ to check, then you can alway go back and try CAS 2, etc. You probably won't by any luck get below CAS 2-3-2- but you can always keep playing, just to see what the modules and setup will do.

For overclocking, the 2.5-3-3-7 is usually a good choice for a few extra MHz.
