Fractal r5 - Top Mount Cooling

Recommended Posts

Really wanted to put a 110gt in this case but the feedback for a top mount is that it just doesn't fit. It has been a few years since my last build and I'm going to spend a good clip of cash in the next few months. I'm using a full tower now but I'd like to get into a 19" case and the r5 looks solid at that height.

I've done a ton of reading some of it back to 2013 about the 110's not fitting and the need to front mount. I hate the idea of a front mount bringing in cool air to heat it and run over the GPU/CPU.

Anyway, my issue is finding a 19" case that can fit two optical drives, ssd and at least one platter drive as well as a Hydro dual fan series cooler.

Here is the lineup. Will change once Kaby Lake is benched against the current chips in the $300-$400 range and the reference 1080 will be replaced with the 1070 G1 when Gigabyte releases it. The MoBo is overkill but it just screams buy me. RAM may change depending on when users start listing the ram they are using that works.

I did a search for "Fractal Design Define R5 Titanium and Corsair H110i GT" and the first result (YouTube video) appears to show that combo working perfectly. The Fractal Design web site says that a 280mm cooler can be mounted in the top, as long as it is less than 55mm thick, including the fans. I'm not sure how thick the H110i GT and it's fans is, but I'll see if I can measure mine tonight, although I think that the thickness was posted on here on another thread in the last couple of days.
