New AX1500i & buzzing noise?

Many years back I used to exclusively use Corsair PSUs - I still have 2-3 in the house, but mostly use them for test/spare builds. However, I moved away from using them in primary builds due to buzzing/humming issues. I recently decide to come back into the fold and ordered a new AX1500i from a store in the US. I plugged in the unit without any cables expect for the power cord. The unit passed the self test.

However, while standing in front of the unit I noticed that even with the power switch set to "off" the unit was generating a buzzing sound. The closer I got to the rear (power cord end) of the unit the louder the noise got. Switching the unit "on" didn't change anything. I also used it to power a spare PC I build to see if applying a load had an effect - it didn't and the same noise is present.

I killed my home AC unit and recorded the noise: [ame=https://youtu.be/za7CG8E0YMc]https://youtu.be/za7CG8E0YMc[/ame]

Is this normal? I read that there was a hardware revision of this unit. How do I tell which version I have?

Thanks.

  2. I read that there was a hardware revision of this unit.

  1. No and I have never heard my AX1500i do this. I got my AX1500i in May 2014 so expect it's the first revision. It's serial is 14189501001009621262.
  2. What is the URL of where you read this?
  3. From what was said in http://forum.corsair.com/forums/showthread.php?p=831020 I suspect there is no revision printed on the PSU and only Corsair will be able to tell the revision by knowing the serial number.
  4. I can't see a revision number printed on either my AX760i or AX1500i.
  5. I feel the PSU firmware and CL4 should report both the firmware revision, hardware revision and PSU serial number, but they do not.

hell no that's not normal. it happens to some "i" units, but it shouldn't happen and it's not normal. get that thing replaced. either replace it at the store that sold it to you or RMA through corsair.

that's the sound a PSU usually makes when a coil or something else is not secured properly and vibrates. it doesn't mean the unit with break or blow up. but it is a defect because it should not be happening.

Corsair support has been surprisingly unhelpful. I had Amazon ship me another brand unit and guess what, it has the same exact issue. I'm guessing more units have this issue, but people don't notice it because they shove the PSU in their case and close it up.

I made a video of the 2nd unit: [ame]https://youtu.be/5-eLnRMIpKk[/ame]

I guess my move from Corsair to Seasonic years ago was a solid movie. I've never had a single issue with the Gold and Platinum Seasonic units, but I really wanted a high wattage Titanium unit.

On my AX1500i it's completely silent, even under load. I turned off all sound and just checked. But I do know some complain of coil whine with them. :sigh!:

for me, it's seasonic, then everyone else. having said that, they sometimes slip up too. rarely, but it happens.

but this is really odd. it shouldn't be happening with units of this caliber. i think someone near the of the assembly line is being stingy with the silicone with this batch of PSUs.

the AX1500i has a "standby" switch rather than a power switch. which means that as long as the power cord is plugged in, power will keep going into the unit. which is why it makes that rattling noise/coil whine even when it's "off". i know it's not helpful, but i thought i could try to clear up why it happens.

in the image below you can see the innards of an AX1500i. all that pasty gray crap around the coils is silicone that prevents them from rattling when there is current running through them. i'm guessing that your PSU wasn't hosed down with enough of this stuff. the PSU will still work fine, but will probably never stop rattling.
