Janus67
Hi, I have recently been having trouble with stability with my system configuration. System Specs: Epox 8RDA+ (latest BIOS) Athlon XP 2500+ ATI Radeon 9800pro (128mb) + the aforementioned RAM the CMX512-3200C2PT and TWINX512-3200LLPT. ^^ the RAM has never been overclocked past the stated 400mhz. When I startup my system everything goes fine, although the timings do not run at the stated speeds (when I have the 256 sticks alone they do, but when I add the 512, the timings are 2.5-3-3-8. I finally became fed up with the RAM when I couldn't even play HL2 and other computer-intensive games with stability, they were always crashing with a memory error being listed. So I decided to go and run memtest86 v2.0 (I believe is the latest), and got these errors: http://janus.benched.net/Image%20Hosted%20Pictures/Digital%20Pictures/Computer/IMG_0527.jpg http://janus.benched.net/Image%20Hosted%20Pictures/Digital%20Pictures/Computer/IMG_0528.jpg I hope the those help explain the problem. What I have tried: Running at a higher voltage (went from auto and set it at 2.77v) still had the errors. My system would not boot having the vdimm voltage at 2.9v (the only other setting higher than 2.77v). If I try to set my timings any looser my motherboard will not even POST (it just hangs and beeps until I reset the CMOS). Clocking the speed down to 333mhz (PC2700 levels). It lowers the timings a bit, but still has the same errors. If you need any other info I am more than happy to send it your way. Thank you for your time. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 29, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 29, 2004 Can you tell me the settings you had set for both CPU and memory? And this is a compaticality issue, so I am moving this thread to the Compatibality section.
Janus67
sorry what exactly do you mean by settings? Stock 2500+ @ 1.675V Overclocked 2500+ = 200mhz x 10.5 = 3000+ speeds @ 1.750V I have always left my RAM on auto voltage, which I am stuck with the timings that I specified, the 2.5-3-3-8, if I change them (along with voltage) the motherboard doesn't POST until I clear the CMOS and set it back. Edit: I don't particularly see how it is a compatibility issue, although the closest Epox board on the site listed is the 8RDA3+ (which is just the next generation one). Any help would be much appreciated.
Janus67
quick bump, could really use some advice/help on this one, I would like to get my sticks replaced since they weren't giving problems when I first got them, but now (without overclocking/improperly handling them) have started having errors and causing programs to crash. Janus67
one last bump, can i please have permission to RMA these sticks? The errors just started happening out of no where.
Wired
Well you're mixing memory of different types so that'd explain the timing changes. Tried JUST the 512 MB by itself? Also, what's the version # of each stick?
Janus67
how do you tell the version number? is it on the sticker on each individual stick of RAM? edit, yes I tried just the 512 stick, and it gave me errors still. I understand now why the timings are higher, but I just don't know why they go above the looser of the timings. But that is just a misunderstanding on my part. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 6, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 6, 2005 Please try and set the CPU to its default, as that might be the CPU topping out. I would try these settings and set the Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts and test with http://www.memtest.org to be sure. CPU Freq: 166 MHz Memory Frequency: 100% Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts Resulting Frequency: 166MHz SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5T SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6T
Janus67
do you want me to keep all 3 sticks of RAM in the motherboard though?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 7, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 7, 2005 Yes, if you still get errors please test the modules one at a time to check for a failing module!
Janus67
okay, i'll test em now and let you know of any changes.
Janus67
update, okay, ran the tests under the settings that you stated, I can confirm that the errors happened with the 512 stick of RAM (as far as I could tell after several passes). Janus67
Just as an FYI: How To Read the Memory Label Thanks, Wired, I saw that when I first registered, but forgot to read it. Sorry about that, if you still want that info I will have it readily available.
