Buzzz
Hi Ram Guy, I just purchased 2 modules of Corsair 512 3200XL (not a twinx). Just after installing it in my computer, I experienced blue screens with messages (I never saw before)like "IRQ NOT LESS OR EQUAL" or " BAD POOL CALLER".... So I decided to go through a complete memtest of both modules. One of the modules is clean, but with the other, I have many errors with Memtest (see picture below) Screenshot Please tell what I must do. My config is : MB Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe 2* 512 Corsair 3200XL @ 2-2-2-5 @ 400MHz. AMD Athlon XP 3200+ @2.2GHz FSB 400MHz. ATI Radeon 9700 Win XP. I forgot to mention it : my ram runs at 2.7V. Thank you in advance.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 You are welcome to try anything you like, but the tested setting for this module would be Cass 2-2-2-5 at DDR400 at 2.75 Volts. However, with this MB I would install them in slots 2-3 with the FSB Jumper set to pins 2-3 furthest away from the CPU and set the timings to Cass 2-3-2-11 at 2.8 Volts for best performance and stability. And I would clear the bios with the CLRTC jumper after you change the jumper settings if changed and then load setup defaults in the bios and set the settings as suggested and test with http://www.memtest.org. Buzzz
but the tested setting for this module would be Cass 2-2-2-5 at DDR400 at 2.75 Volts. That's what I did, except the 2.75V that I can't have with this MB. Can I try 2.8V without risks? However, with this MB I would install them in slots 2-3 with the FSB Jumper set to pins 2-3 furthest away from the CPU and set the timings to Cass 2-3-2-11 at 2.8 Volts for best performance and stability. And I would clear the bios with the CLRTC jumper after you change the jumper settings if changed and then load setup defaults in the bios and set the settings as suggested and test with http://www.memtest.org. What is the aim of this procedure? Are you joking me? At the price I bought this RAM, I want it to work at the advertised timings. Can you explain me why one of the modules works fine with my current settings (2-2-2-5 at DDR400 at 2.7V) and the other one fails the memtest? May I missunderstand what you want to say. Or you missunderstand me : my system is at the standard settings for this RAM.
Wired
The memory is warrantied up to, but not over, 2.9 volts, so trying 2.8 volts is fine. Sometimes they need a bit more voltage to be stable.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 Buzzz I have had four MB's of this model and the settings I gave you are what I found to work best with this MB. Please try it and if that does not resolve the problem, then by all means we will be happy to replace the modules.
Buzzz
Buzzz I have had four MB's of this model and the settings I gave you are what I found to work best with this MB. Please try it and if that does not resolve the problem, then by all means we will be happy to replace the modules. Again, I say , running my system with the settings you give doesn't satisfy my. As I already said, one of the modules works fine with my current settings, and I want the other one to run with the same settings. The memory I had before was a Twinx 512 3200LL set and it worked well on my MB with the 2.5 2 2 6 settings at 2.7V. I don't think the MB is an issue. I will give a try at 2.8V. but not at 2-3-2-11 at FSB 200 single channel. It's totally out of question. Do you know what a memory module running at these settings costs compared to a 3200XL?? If it doesn't work at 2-2-2-5 DDR400, I want it to be replaced.
Buzzz
New test of the "bad" module at 2.8V: 250 errors after 1 pass with memtest. whichever memory bank it is installed on. For information : Results of the test of the "good" module at 2.7V (test done on Sunday): 0 error after 3 hours of memtest. Again, I repeat that these tests were made with only one module on the MB at a time. I'm not a beginner, and I know that I've done nothing wrong. Conclusion : I want my "bad" module exchanged. Buzzz
Is it just a compliance answer, or do you agree with me? ;): thank you anyway.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 Buzz, weather I agree with you or not is not the issue or question. Sorry. But if you have not tried the settings I gave you with the FSB Jumper then I would have to say NO. If you have and still have the problem then maybe yes. But it's hard to give you a definitive answer as there are just too many possible issues that could complicate the problem. So bottom line if you are not happy with your modules, I have no problem replacing them, even if I don’t think that’s the problem..
Buzzz
I decided to play the game, and I tested your settings. Just take a look at the following picture (10 minutes old) Screenshot What do you mean now? Are you convinced?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 Did you change the FSB jumper and clear the bios?
Buzzz
Yes, but after clearing the bios, I put FSB to 400 again, otherwise my processor would have run at only 1.1GHz. Do you mean, I would have to run at such a bad speed???It would be much slower than my previous config!!!!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 No you leave the FSB jumper set to pins 2-3 and just set the CPU speed to 200 FSB in the bios. If that is what you did then lets try replacing your modules. Buzzz
I'll try tomorrow. Today is too late. But I still don't see the interest of this underclock (much underclock in fact) test... Of course every module designed for 2-2-2-5 @400 should normally run at 2-3-2-11 @200. Even noname Ram can do this. Shouldn't it?
Buzzz
This morning, I gave the memory to a friend of mine who has a system totally different from mine. MB : Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 Proc : Pentium 4, 3 GHz Prescott Result : he encountered errors in memetest at the same memory adresses as me. Do I still need to your test? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 21, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 21, 2004 Buzz, Gigabyte MB's in general do not over clock well and it is up to you, I have no problem replacing the modules, but if this is a setting issue replacing the module will not solve the problem. In addition, you are not under clocking your system with the settings I gave you. I have this MB and have had 4 of them so I am very familiar with this MB and the settings I gave you are based on my experience with this MB you have, ASUS A7N8X-E. Again please try the settings I gave you and see if that solves the problem. If not, then let's try replacing your modules. Witht he modules in slots 2-3 and the FSB Jumper set to pins 2-3 then set the following settings: CPU Freq: 200 MHz System Performance: User defined Memory Frequency: 100% Dim Voltage to 2.8 Volts Resulting Frequency: 200MHz SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 2T SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 5T Then please test the system with http://www.memtest.org. If the system passes then you can try with the Rass to Cass set to "2"
Buzzz
Ok, ok I will try it this evening.
Buzzz
Another question. On a forum (houseofmobos) A saw a post in which a guy told that he had better performances with a Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS) setting of 10 than with 5. Does it make sense to you? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 21, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 21, 2004 No Problem, please let me know how you make out.
Buzzz
So, I did exactly what you said. I got less errors than before, but I still got more than 50 errors in one pass with memtest. So I hope I'll get my RMA soon. Thank you for you support.
