ManfredGBaur
I have 2 pairs of TwinxCMX512-3200LL memory and encountered strange things recently. Programms crash to desktop, write errors, etc. Checkit memory test did not start at all with a faulty ram message. Docmem (running from a DOS diskette) reported errors as well. Taking the faulty pair out of my box resulted in a stable system again. Based on Corsair's lifetime warranty, I would like to have my memory exchanged or repaired. Wired
What CPU / FSB / motherboard do you have? Tried the "bad" pair in the other slots, or one stick at a time?
ManfredGBaur
MB: ASUS P4C800-E FSB: IntelNetBurst 64-bit Real Clock: 200 MHz Effective Clock: 800 MHz Bandwith: 6400 MB/s Yes I did swap the Twinx pairs, result was same: erros reported. Since I have matching pairs I did not try single sticks.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 And what do you have the Dim Voltage set too? And are you trying to run both sets at the same time? (4 modules). And did you Disable legacy USB when you ram http://www.memtest.org?
ManfredGBaur
Excuse me, I do not try to run both sets, I have been running them for more than a year now. I know that my motherboard has a problem with Corsair DDR of this type, therefore I set the timing manually as recommended at the ASUS support page 2-2-3-6. The Voltage is 1.7 V (according to ASUS Probe) and yes I did disable legacy USB. Memtest reported during the moving inversion 32 bit test 48 errors with the error bit 20 (the last 2 digits all others were 0). After that I canceled testing, I like computers but I do not have endless time and I think one error is already one too much.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 I’m sorry but I don’t understand what you are trying too say. If you are running all four modules and have this issue, that may be the problem is what I am trying to say. In other words. I would suggest testing them one module at a time and or one set at a time to make sure its not some other problem. In addition, if have tested them one at a time and do find you just have a failing module, I would suggest you submit all 4 modules for rma, by following the link in my signature "I Think I Have a Bad Part. What Do I Do?" that way all of the modules will be mateched. However, officially we do not support more than one set of Twinx on any MB. Not that you cannot do that just we would not be able to guarantee the tested settings in this case (Cass 2-3-2-6 at DDR400) when you have all four modules installed. ManfredGBaur
Sorry for the confusion, well lets start all over again. I did have 2 pairs of TWINX1024-3200LL installed, totaling 2 GB of memory. Then strange things started to happen. My 3Ware S-ATA raid controller was verifying again and again (I don't know if that's related to memory), programs crashed to the desktop and some games started with an error that made me think of memory problems. Though I ran CheckIt's memory test but the test did not even start and reported faulty memory immediately. After that I was looking around on you forum and found the memory test utility. Then I booted from the floppy and run the utility, the first couple of tests passed but with the “moving inversion 32 bit” test the utility reported 48 errors with the message error bit 0000020. Well than I removed one pair of memory sticks. Stick data 1: CMX512-3200LL; XMS3205v1.1 0308165 XMS 3200 512MB 400 MHz 2226-T1 Stick data 2: CMX 512-3200LL XMS3205v1.1 0308165 XMS 3200 512MB 400 MHz 2226-T1 I was lucky, it seems to be the suspect because after that no more error messages came up und also CheckIt run the memory test without problems. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 20, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 20, 2004 Please test the modules one at a time with the recommended settings and see if the modules will produce any errors on those settings.
ManfredGBaur
Well, I did that already. The pair of modules that I have removed does produce errors when running the memory test. I did run the test with each pair using recommended settings and I did run the test with each pair with lower clock speed (3-3-3-8-8). The good pair was ok, the bad one produced errors. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 4, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 4, 2005 I would suggest you send all of your modules so they match. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!
ManfredGBaur
I would suggest you send all of your modules so they match. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! Hi RAM GUY, First I did not read your message carefully, though I only send the faulty pair for replacement. Locking at the parts I got, I am happy that I did that! My faulty Twinx 3200 LL pair was replaced by a pair of 3200 XL sticks, on the first look, great. But know it comes Not to mix up things I did remove my remaining pair of 3200 LL and install the XL sticks in what ASUS calls DIMM A1 and DIMM B1 of my ASUS P4D-800 E board. After a couple of blue screens I did run memtest86 and to my surprise the test started reporting errors right from the beginning of the test 3, after 291 errors I canceled further testing. BIOS settings are as mentioned on your XMS Testing and qualification post: Latency: 2T SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 2T SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 2T SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 5T SDRAM Bank Interleave: 4 Bank All other settings are motherboard defaults. To confirm the performance of my old 3200 LL sticks I did run the same test and those sticks passed 5 complete runs without a single error. Did I just get what another poor guy sent in for replacement or does the quality of memory just depend on good luck?? The RMA number was R67728 Best regards Manfred
Wired
That's really odd. Corsair ONLY replaces memory with new memory.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 17, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 17, 2005 Please make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your MB and load Setup/optimized default settings, and try the following BIOS settings; TwinX1024 or TwinX512-3200XL Advanced/Jumper Free AI over clocking: Manual CPU Freq: 200 DRAM Clock: 400 MHz Memory or Dim Reference voltage: 2.75 Volts System performance: AUTO AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!* Advanced/Chipset Configure Dram timing by SPD: Disabled/User define SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 2T SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 2T SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 5T SDRAM Burst Length: 8 Performance Acceleration Mode: Enabled USB Legacy Support: Disabled All other settings should be set to default settings! Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure! ManfredGBaur
That's really odd. Corsair ONLY replaces memory with new memory. You name it, and the strange thing is the packing was original (at least it looks like) but not sealed. I didn’t mind since it’s a replacement but on the other hand I don’t think it’s on a shelf like that; it’s too easy to swap the contents.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 17, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 17, 2005 So have you tried the settings? To answer your question in regards your replacement; all replacements are brand new, and yes it is not sealed since it is coming directly from us. We exactly know which one we sent you so nobody in our company will actually swap it out before shipping it out to you, since all logs are in the system and basically if the customer complain upon receiving the modules, we can actually verify if the modules were replaced upon receiving the modules that the customer is claiming to be defective again. Hi RAM GUY, Well I did run memtest86 V1.40 with the 3200 XL sticks installed. I made all the BIOS adjustments as you indicated. Additionally I removed or disabled everything except the Keyboard, Mouse and Graphic Card. The test result was devastating; I let 2 runs pass completely and interrupted testing during Test 3 of Pass 3 with 2816 errors indicated. As far as I could see all errors showed Err-bits 00000080 (relatively seldom) 04000000 (almost all the time) Regards Manfred
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 17, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 17, 2005 Please try to contact our customer service department again to get it replaced, they should be able to help you out and get these modules replaced again; but then again after receiving the replacement and if you are still having the same problem, then I will suggest that the problem is not coming from the memory module itself. ManfredGBaur
Additional remark: I did go back to the latest released BIOS for my Board which is version 1019. previously I had beta BIOS 1021.003 installed. Manfred

One more question: Since I do still have the good pair of 3200 LL memory left, I wonder whether it is wise to mix those with XL memory, but I also don’t like to send all the memory back at once since I would be left with my PC not operational. Can I send them in 2 batches if all should be replaced? Shipping cost for the second shipment on my account of course. Regards Manfred

ManfredGBaur
Hi RAM GUY, I just called your technical support department as you asked me to do. Let me tell you that this was one of my best experiences with any support department I ever called. You guys are very helpful, come right down to the point and even call back after a couple of seconds when the line is accidentally dropped. Every manufacturer does have bad parts from time to time but the speed and the courtesy to solve such problems makes the top of the industry and as to my experience so far Corsair is on the peak. Keep up your excellent work; you can be sure that I will recommend Corsair products to my friends and business associates not only for its top performance but also for the outstanding support. Thank you very much indeed and have a great day. Manfred
