H80 Replacement fans

Hello Folks!

I have an H80 Hydro Series and replaced the fans with a single SP120. After this the speed profiles did not work.

After some research I found a couple posts and a YouTube video calming that on the H80 you must have the stock fans for the speed profiles to work.

First, off I would like to know if that is true. Second, if it is true, I would like to know if there is any exception to that rule?

Also, this model did not come with a connector for Corsair Link. If I was to get one am I able to bypass the button profiles and just do it via Corsair Link in windows?

I have tried configurations of one SP120 combined with a stock one with no luck.

If you haven't guessed by now I don't have one of the stock fans anymore and am unable to test to see if that really is the issue.

Anyway any insight would be most appreciated.

The fans that come with the H80 should be 4-pin, which would explain why your new 3-pin fan isn't being properly controlled. Double check the fan headers for the H80 and see if they're 4-pin, if they are you've found your problem.

I am almost 100% certain that the stock fans were 3 pin voltage controlled. The 2 I have in there now are 3 pin. And on the pump there is room for a 4 pin.

EDIT: Upon further research I found a post from u/RAMGUY where he confirms that there was a version of the H80 where variable speed 3 pin fans were shipped.

I cannot speak for other fans but the fans we bundle with our coolers are either PWM Fans 4-Pin or the variable 3 Pin version and the voltage supplied will vary the fan speed 5-6 to 13 Volts. Some of the third party fans (3-Pin) are not variable speed and will run at full speed and if the voltage drops bellow about 10 Volts they will turn off.

UPDATE:

I am writing this update because I could only find one place mentioning this on The Great Google and because of that I was skeptical that it would work.

Had the opportunity to replace the aftermarket fans with two stock H80 Hydro Series 3 pin fans. The button speed profiles worked. It seems that the pump recognizes if a fan may be under volted for a variable speed. I have read that some fans when under volted will just shut off instead of reducing speed. The unit must recognize this and decides to not under volt them when it senses that they can't take it. Or perhaps they sense that it is the original fans. I honestly don't know. All I know is that the stock 3 pin fans DO work with the button profile speeds. The replacement fans did not vary in speed when the profile was changed.

Hope this helps folks in the future.
