Can you recommend a motherboard to go with my memory?

I have just purchased a Twinx1024-3200XLP memory module pair and I'm having to replace my Asus A7N8X Deluxe motherboard because of a defect. I have an Athlon XP 2700+ cpu and am wondering what motherboard would be best to go with this memory and cpu?

I'm also contemplating upgrading the CPU as well to an AMD 64 (specifically what, I don't know yet) and I'm looking for recommendations primarily based on compatibility with my existing RAM and secondarily a system that is not top of the line, but provides the best bang for buck.

An additional issue might be my power supply which is a Antec TruePower 380. So, at this point I'm looking for guidence in this upgrade and hoping to upgrade to a solid, performing system without paying top dollar

Thanks for all the help, this forum is great!

Staying with the Athlon XP (Socket A), I'd look at the ABit NF7-S, the ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe or the MSI K7N2-Delta2 Platinum.

Going with an Athlon 64, you have lots of choices...

Socket 754 board suggestions are the ASUS K8N-E Deluxe, the ABit NF8, or the MSI K8N Neo Platinum. All of these are nForce 3 250Gb based boards.

Socket 940 boards are NOT compatable with 3200XL modules.

Socket 939 suggestions are the ASUS A8V Deluxe or A8N-SLi Deluxe, the ABit AV8 or AX8, and the MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum. Take note, however, then A8N-SLi Deluxe and the AX8 both require you to purchase a PCI-Express video card! The rest are still AGP 8x.

P.S. If you couldn't tell, these are my personal favorite brands. There are others out there, but I don't use them because of ratings and my own experiences!

Yeah... running SLi 6800 ULTRA PCIe video cards will currently cost you something like $1200.00 just for the video cards and another $200 for a 700 Watt ATX 12v 2.0 PSU.

IMHO, running PCIe will only benefit you if you're running the VERY latest games or some very serious GFX software which will utilize the bandwidth provided. What I have seen of PCIe has made me wet myself, so I'm pretty gung-ho about it right now.

Anyways, the cheapest way is to upgrade the current mainboard, keep the CPU.

The most expensive way is to go with a S939 nForce 4 board (PCIe).

yeah, those are really nice numbers :nodding:

Too bad something like that would ruin me for working on any other computer or just flat - ruin me....

Thanks for the advise so far. I haven't decided whether to upgrade yet but if i do, I think it will be this:

  • ASUS "A8V Deluxe" VIA K8T800 Pro Chipset mboard
  • AMD ATHLON 64 3500+, 512K, L2 Cache, Socket 939

It will be a pretty good improvement for me.
