Memory errors

Hi,

I just purchased a 1GByte pair of TwinX Matched Memory. I've been getting error messages stating that memory cannot be "read". This usually causes just the program to crash, but at least once a week, it takes down the entire OS. I'm running an Athalon 3200+ Barton on an ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard. A representative example of the memtest96 reports the following errors:

Test # errors

5 2

6 3

7 1

8 33

Any ideas on how to proceed?

thanks!

CAS Latency: 2T

RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 2T

Row Precharge (tRP): 2T

Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 5T

DDR Voltage: 2.75 or 2.8 volts

Try those timings, see what happens. YOu may have to update your BIOS, and / or set the tRCD to 3.

Well, this seems to have helped a great deal, but not entirely solved the problem. I was able to run all the applications that caused memory access errors before without problem (Half-Life 2, various screen savers, MS Outlook & Word, etc.). But the system is still a little sluggish and memtest86 reported 14 errors from test #8 after running for 6-7 hours. No other test types reported errors. Here are the settings I used:

CAS Latency: 2T

RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 2T

Row Precharge (tRP): 2T

Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 5T

DDR Voltage: 2.7 volts (this was at 2.6 previously)

What should I try next? Will upping the voltage to 2.8 pose any risks to my mainboard? Or should I first try setting the tRCD to 3 as Wired suggested?

Thanks for your help Wired!

Well, upping the voltage to 2.8 reduced the number of errors during a 7 hour memtest run to 2 type 8 errors. I'll give Wired's other suggestion a try after work today.

One memory stick is in DIMM_B1, but I don't remeber where the other one is. Either way, both configurations support Dual-Channel operation. Is either DIMM_A1 or DIMM_A2 preferable over the other for dual channel support? I'm 99% sure that jumper is set at factor default to enable FSB400/333/266 support. CPU-Z is reporting a 400 mhz bus speed with a 200 mhz FSB value. Should I be checking on anything here?

Thanks!

Please make sure that you have the latest bios Ver. 1.013 I believe and then set the FSB jumper to pins 2-3 furthest away from the CPU and then with no power connected reset or clear the bios and then when you turn it on load setup defaults and set the following settings with the modules in slots 2-3 skip the first slot:

Dim Voltage 2.8 Volts

CAS Latency: 2T

RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 2T If you still get errors set this to "3"

Row Precharge (tRP): 2T

Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 5T
