Wierd Crashing...

Recommended Posts

I don't think this has anything to do with memory, but i thought i would post it here because i'm at a loss, and you guys are all smart, and helped me last time i had questions! :sunglasse

Once Upon a Time, there were 2 System (main details listed below)....

System 1-------

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe

AMD Athlon XP 3200+

1GB Coarsair TwinX 3200

80GB Maxtor 7200rpm SATA HD

Sapphire ATI Radeon 9600XT 256MB

Windows XP Home (SP2)

System 2-------

Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe

AMD Athlon XP 3200+

512MB "Generic" (samsung possibly)

120GB Maxtor 7200rpm SATA HD

Asus GeForce4 Ti4800

Windows XP Home (SP2)

Ok. These belong to a couple freinds of mine, both fairly new machines (one's a weed old, two's a couple months). Everything is assembled correctly, or so it seems.. and windows applications are all running fine, no problems.

PROBLEM: every time they play any sort of games, thier computer crashes after about 10-20 minutes. occasionally it crashes to desktop, and you get a message asking if you want to send an error report (which i'm sure you've seen). but more often than not, it hard boots the computer.

Sometimes, just before the computer reboots, you can catch a glimpse of a blue screen spouting errors regarding memory dumps, and cpu memory leaks, or somthing, but it only flashes for a moment, and i didn't have time to read the whole message.

Strange that this same phenomenon is happening on 2 systems....

Anything you guys can suggest would be help, i'm just lost with this one!

Thanks in advance,

-Liquidite

Do you have a good power supply? I suggest the "Turbo 510 Deluxe," which is quite popular amongst the folks who are in the know.

ps. I had reboots/restarts under load and eventually discovered my proc had failed.

most of us in the know prefer to call it the pc power and cooling turbo 510 deluxe, as for a cpu problem like that, it could be due to alot of things apart from a failed cpu, heat, voltage etc.. plays an important role. A valid point however about the psu.

Well, Thanks again to everyone who replied, as always, you've all been a big help.

Here's what i discoverd (if your curious). I ran MemTest86, as mention above, and turns out it found a good many errors. I had my bud call his memory vendor, and they said "Yeah Samsung Memory and Asus boards tend to do that" ?!?!!??!? First i've heard of it. Whatever, i don't like arguing the the "know it alls" at the computer stores. They let my bud bring in the memory, and swap it for a fresh stick. No problems since.

As for my other buddy, his seemed to be a problem with drivers, we updated every driver... and i mean EVERY driver we could think of, one by one, and eventually the crashing became less and less frequent, and has now stopped completly....

This may also be due to the fact that (despite my best efforts) he refuses to run ANY sort of virus protection/firewall. --> and lets just say he has some "Adult" internet habits which seem to be quite a magnet for the more deviously inclined.

Thanks again all!
