Bazza32
Hi, I have the following system setup: Mobo: MSI K8N NEO Platinum CPU: AMD 64 3400+ Memory: Corsair TWINX1024-3200XLPRO DDR 1024MBKit w/two matched 512MB 3200XL PRO's DIMM Video: ATI Radeon 9800 XT I have been running with no problems for a couple of months. The other day I shut down the PC and when I tried to restart I got the following blue screen of death error: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. I could not start the PC at all, even in safe mode. I eventually managed to get it to the recovery console, to try and run a chkdsk, but that just hung Initially I thought it may be a software problem, but then I read on the net that it may be Memory related. I have the modules in slots 1 and 2 on the board. The only bios setting I have ever set is the DRAM voltage, which I set to 2.75v. All of the other setting are at Auto. I took out the module in slot two and tried to start the PC and it booted up first time. I put back in the module in slot 2 and tried to boot, but back to the same error. I moved the module to slot 3, same error. I then took out both of them and put the one causing the problems in on its own into slot 1, and it does not even read the bios. Any ideas if there is anything else I can try? Thanks Jon.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 19, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 19, 2004 For some reason, the MSI K8N/K8N Neo2 MB doesn't want to run at a CAS 2/2/2/5 latency setting, but works great with 2/3/2/5, so please try the following BIOS settings. Please make sure you have the memory module installed on slot 1&3 and that you have the latest BIOS installed in your MB and load optimized/optimal default settings, and try the following BIOS settings; Advanced Chipset: Memclock Mode: Manual (400) Bank Interleaving: 4/Enabled Burst Length: 4 SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 5T SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 2T Frequency Voltage Control: Spread Spectrum: Enabled CPU FSB Clock: 200 DDR Voltage: 2.7/2.75 Volts All other settings should be set to default settings! Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure! Bazza32
Hi, Thanks for the reply. Just a couple of queries on your request. The following settings are not on my bios, should they be? Bank Interleaving: 4/Enabled Burst Length: 4 Also the following setting - Memclock Mode: Manual (400) only goes up as far as 200Mhz. The options are Auto, 100, 133, 166, 200. What should I set it to? Thanks Jon.
Bazza32
Assuming my setup is correct and I think it possibly is, I went ahead and did the memtest from a bootable CD. On the working module there were no errors, and the test went to 100% pass. When I put in the second module, nothing happened at all. Looking inside the case all of the LEDs on the module, but no-one is home I am afraid. The PC does not even show the bios screen. What should I do? Thanks Jon. Bazza32
Hi Ram Guy, Thank for that. As I bought them as a pair, should I send them both back or just the one? Thanks Jon.
Wired
TwinX are recommended to be sent back as a pair.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 22, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 22, 2004 I would suggest you send the pair if they were purchased as Twinx set!
Bazza32
Hi again Ram Guy, I would like to come back to this issue again please, as something similar appears to be happenning again. I am not sure it is the memory though! I managed to get an RMA from my supplier eventually following the conversation I had with you. Since then I have had the memory replaced. Well I think they might have just replaced the faulty module. Everything was working fine until last week, when the PC locked up. I was unable to get any response from the PC and the only way to get it back was to power off and back on again. Following that on the reboot the problems started. There was no post, only a black screen and a long repetitive beep from the PC. Following a number of repeat attempts and always the same. I removed the memory module from slot three, and the PC booted fine. I then took out the module from slot 1 and replaced it with the one I had taken out. This is where it gets a bit strange, sometimes it would work sometimes it would not. I even tried moving slots and would get it to work sometimes. There is no consistency to it. I managed to get memtest run against it today, on one of the occasions where it decided to work and got the error as in the attatched screenshot. What is even more worrying is that my good module also did the same this evening. No errors in memtest though after 6 passes. Any ideas??? Could it be the mobo??? Damn it cannot attach the jpeg!!! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 31, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 31, 2004 I would suggest testing the modules in another system, that would help you isolate the memory from your system.
Bazza32
Hi I tested those sticks of RAM in another PC (Dell Dimension 8300). The PC I tested them in is of a lower specification, and the Ram was clocked down to 159Mhz (DDR318). But I ran Memtest for multiple on a combination of both, and then both modules separately. There were no errors. Would the clocking down make a difference. Thanks
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 4, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 4, 2005 If you had a failing module it will fail no matter what the frequency is running at. I have no problem replacing your modules, but based on what you have posted I would suspect some other issue. Please follow the directions under "I think I have a bad module" under this forum or if you have trouble, Please send us a email with a copy of the form or all of your info name address and phone# and the Module part# and copy the link to this post and email it to Rma@corsairmemory.com. If after 1 day or 24 hours excluding weekends you do not get the rma please email the same to warranty@corsairmemory.com and we will help to resolve it.
