Memory Module Producing Errors - RMA Please

jwtaylor99

Recommended Posts

Both Memtest86 and Microsoft's memory tester have produced errors on a CMX512-3200C2 (XMS3202/v2.2) module I have in my computer. I have also received various intermittent memory read errors from Windows (XP SP2 Pro). I would like to submit the module for replacement.

thanks, jwt

Please make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your MB and load Setup/optimized default settings, and try the following BIOS settings;

CMX512-3200C2

SOYO COMBO Features

CPU Freq: 200

DRAM Clock: 400 MHz

Memory or Dim Reference voltage: 2.7/2.75 Volts

System performance: Standard

AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!*

Advanced Tune-Up Setting

Configure Dram timing by SPD: Disabled/User define

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T (2.5T AMD Platform)

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6T

SDRAM Burst Length: 8

All other settings should be set to default settings!

Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure!

I can't crank the freq up to 200, but I bumped it up to 160 which gives me a SPD memory at 400Mhz. I verified the other settings and changed the voltage and tRAS to match recommeded. The result was 10+ errors on each of 4 passes in memtest86. All errors were in test 5 (Block moves, 64 moves) and between the range of 3fd9e5c8 and 3fdb3588. Swapped memory modules and tested - only one module produced the errors Please advise.

Sorry I thought you have 200MHz Frequency, please set the following BIOS setttings:

CMX512-3200C2

SOYO COMBO Features

CPU Freq: 133

DRAM Clock: 266 MHz (if not over clocking 333 MHz)

Memory or Dim Reference voltage: 2.7/2.75 Volts

System performance: Standard

AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!*

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6T

SDRAM Burst Length: 4

All other settings should be set to default settings!

I thought the fact that one stick works, and the other failed would point to the fact that the module was bad. I also find it incredible that your apparent solution is to run 400 speed memory at 333 or less.

Thanks, but that is not why I paid the Corsair price. Your sham warranty approach of having the customer try one option after another is worthless for me as my computer is my business. I do not have the time to reconfigure, pull modules, run tests, then rinse and repeat...repeat...repeat.

I went out and purchased replacement PNY memory. Works like a champ.

Sorry you feel that way, however no one ever said his suggestion was a solution, just a troubleshooting step. Ultimately, that's a 533 Mhz CPU, which prefers 333 Mhz memory speeds. It can run async with 400 Mhz memory, however the possiblity that it may cause errors solely because of this is there. These questions and tests are policy and recommended to do because of all of the possibile problems that can happen. I've seen people here with tens of thousands of errors simply because of a simple setting being incorrect, and after it's fixed, viola, no more problem.

If you want an RMA, I'm sure you'll get it, as Ram Guy will usually approve an RMA, even if the evidence doesn't suggest that it's the memory, as long as they have tried the troubleshooting steps suggested and it'll make them happy. Look around the forums, I've NEVER seen anyone's RMA request get denied. Either their problem gets solved through the correct settings, troubleshooting, or an RMA. The warranty isn't a sham, and the suggestions aren't there to run anyone around in circles, or to make anyone frustrated, they're there to help out, to figure out what the problem is.

Thanks Wired,

And jwtaylor99

This is a chipset limitation.

If the FSB of your CPU is 400 For Intel and 100 MHz for AMD, the memory speed supports only DDR 266.

If the FSB of your CPU is 533 For Intel and 133/166 MHz for AMD, the memory speed supports DDR 266/333

If the FSB of your CPU is 800 MHz for Intel and 200 MHz for AMD, the memory speed supports DDR 333/400

If you just want to get your modules replaced, I have no problem with that but what you had posted suggested it may be some other issue.

Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

Everything I have read states that the ability of the P4 and i845 (and up) chipsets to run async with memory is "critical for maximizing performance". That said, I am building a new PC with an 800FSB. I believe the memory I have is the recommended memory for that, and will use the sticks in that machine WITHOUT overclocking anything. Then test 'em and see what happens. If I still get errors, I will submit the sticks for replacement.

Keep in mind on the SOYO, I can step the FSB 1MHz at a time, but DRAM settings are either Auto, FSB multipliers (1, 1.25, or 1.33) or SPD settings. From what I can tell, I cannot set the FSB and DRAM speed completely separate which makes it difficult to even comply with the settings request.

let's keep in touch, jt

Both modules failed in the new motherboard (P4 3.2CGHz 800 FSB and I875 chipset) using Memtest86. I tested them together and individually. I tried multiple combinations of settings including those recommended in the previous posts. Each variation produced hundreds of errors in only 2-3 passes. Other 3200 memory modules worked in the motherboard. Therefore I will be submitting both Corsair modules for replacement. I am assuming that is okay and I will just use the link in the above posts.

thanks, jt

  • 1 month later...

Greetings and Happy New Year!

I received the replacement sticks in the mail (CMX512-3200C2 : XMS3202v1.2 ) back around Christmas, installed and tested with Memtest86 and they produced errors. Since I did not have time to start detailed tests then, I removed them until recently. Here are the results and background.

This memory is installed in a new system -

Soyo P4i875P Dragon 2 V1.0

3.2C P4 - not overclocked - all default / auto settings

GForce 6800GT vid

SB Audiology 2 PCI

Antec TruePower 430W

Prior to installing the Corsair memory, I was running a single stick of 512MB Kingston HyperX UL3200 CL at 2.5-3-3-5 and was very stable. After installing the Corsairs in dual channel mode, I received errors on Memtests 4,5, and 6 where the second bit was always in error (Error = 01000000). I tried multiple timings and voltages with no progress. I then ran both sticks in the same bank (ie single channel) and still got the same / similar errors - though less of them. I ran a single stick and still received the errors at multiple timings including 3-4-4-8 and 2.8v. I swapped that one with the other Corsair stick and it was fine. I was even able to step the timings down on that stick to 2.5-3-3-6, but I could not set the voltage below 2.8. That set-up passed 24 passes in MemTest. I then put the Kingston back into the machine in a dual channel mode and tested that set-up at the timings / voltage above and ran 50 passes of MemTest without an error. That is the set-up I am running right now.

I know the i875s are known for not handling low latency very well and I am not worried about trying to get to 2-2-2-4 but I do think the stick of memory that produced the errors is not a good stick and the replacement needs a replacement. Agree / Disagree?

thanks, JT
