EvilGrin
Ok, I recently bought 2x512mb DDR400 Corsair Valueram sticks from dabs.com and I've put the memory in my machine and it basically crashes under heavy load (games) with various suprious memory errors. If I'm lucky, it'll reboot too. :) Machine is a AMD Barton 2.2Ghz with a Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo (latest bios version). Prior to the faulty memory it's been running on 512mb of Corsair DDR400 XMS quite happily for over 6 months. What I've tried to get it stable: - running the memory in single channel mode by putting the sticks in the 'wrong' slots. - Fiddling with the memory timings (Auto, By SPD, manual). - reseating the memory sticks I've put the old 512mb back in it for the time being and I got a good 6 hour session of EQ2 in, so there is nothing obviously wrong with my system. Can you confirm that: a) I've not missed something obvious in my diagnostics and therefore b) the ram needs returning to dabs because its faulty. EvilGrin
I need an answer from tech support before I can RMA the memory with dabs.com
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 19, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 19, 2004 Please make sure that you have the ljumper setting set at 2-3 and not to the default which is 1-2; also please make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your MB and load Setup/Optimized default settings, and try the following BIOS settings; VS1GBKIT400 or VS512MB400 CPU Freq: 200 MHz (400 FSB) System Performance: User Define Memory Frequency: 100% Resulting Frequency: 200 MHz (400 FSB) Memory Timing: User Define SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5T SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 8T DDR Reference Voltage: 2.7 Volts AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!* All other settings are motherboards defaults Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure!
EvilGrin
jumper is set correctly. Bios is latest and settings are as you describe. Machine still crashes.
EvilGrin
Ok, I tried some different memory again to try and figure this out. This time I'm using some Corsair Platinum TwinX 1Gb modules out of my brothers machine. I'm getting exactly the same problems as with the valueram. So maybe it isn't the ram after all? I'll try a few memtest86 sessions.
EvilGrin
I only get a couple of errors on the second module with memtest on one of the 5 passes I did with it. I guess I shouldn't see any errors though? :)
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 22, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 22, 2004 If memtest86 foundproblems or errors on both type VS or XMS memory modules, then I will suggest you to look at other hardware/peripherals installed on your system. I do not think the problem is coming from the memory modules!
EvilGrin
Ok, I've tinkered some more. What I've found is that if I knock the speed down to 83% (DDR333) the modules will run reliably, however they crash the machine if I try and run them at their rated DDR400. As I mentioned earlier, I can put my old 2x256mb XMS sticks in and play games for hours. The motherboard/rest of the hardware is fine otherwise my machine would crash even with the 2x256 XMS sticks in no? My old 2x256 XMS sticks do not fail memtest. Wired
What's the speed / part # of the 256 sticks?

Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 22, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 22, 2004 Please set the timings at 2/3/2/6 RAS to CAS will be 3.
EvilGrin
Still locks/hard resets at DDR400.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 28, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 28, 2004 know you said you checked but what you have posted suggests some other problem. Please make sure the FSB jumper is on pins 2-3 furthest away from the CPU and then reset the bios and load setup defaults and set the timings manually to Cass 2.5-3-3-8 and set the memory frequency at 100% and set the Dim Voltage to 2.8 Volts and test the modules one at a time. If both pass then please try them in slots 2-3 and test again.
CaptainSkippy
I just got the VS1GBKIT400 and I installed it in my system consisting of an Asus A7N8X with an Athlon XP 3200+ Barton 400FSB and I'm luck if a powercycle gets my system to boot. I adjusted my system settings to match the above except for the jumper setting indicated. What jumper are you refering to? I checked my manual and the closes thing I've found are two jumpers related to the USB voltages. Could you please clairfy. Please make sure that you have the ljumper setting set at 2-3 and not to the default which is 1-2;
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 25, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 25, 2004 Check page 1 10 in user manual Version E1293 it's called CPU_FSB Jumper!
