CMX512-3200C2PT and Asus P4P800-E Deluxe (and Intel D865PERL)

Hi there ppl and Ram Guy,

I got 2 modules of CMX512-3200C2PT, being:

number 1: lot #0403125 (XMS3202v1.2)

number 2: lot #0324027 (XMS3202v2.2)

I had an Intel D865PERL and had random problems, like crashes and hangs (for over a year, cause I didn't know memtest back then).

Decided to run memtest and noticed errors, being the modules in dual or single channel.

Then I found a guy here on the forum with the same board and modules, and the ram guy said the Intel mobo has a fixed ram voltage, so the C2 module shouldn't be a good idea with it.

So, I bought an Asus P4P800-E Deluxe, which even has the 3200C2 listed as compatible/recommended. But, got the same problems as with the Intel board.

Details (with Asus):

memtest86+ 1.30

p4 2.6c (no overclocking)

fsb 200MHz

ECC and PAT disabled

ati radeon 9600 pro

with module number 1:

test 5

with module number 2:

2,5-3-3-8 - Auto voltage - Legacy USB OFF - AGP 1.6V

1st pass:

test 5 around 98%

failing address: from beginning to end - good: ffffffbf - bad: ffffffff - 1037 errors

2nd pass:

test 5 around 98%

failing address: from beginning to end - good: ffffffbf - bad: ffffffff - 1342 errors

with module number 2:

2,5-3-3-8 - 2.85V - Legacy USB OFF - AGP 1.6V

1st pass:

test 5 around 98%

failing address: from beginning to end - good: ffffffbf - bad: ffffffff - 2407 errors

with module number 2:

2-3-3-6 - 2.85V - Legacy USB OFF - AGP 1.6V

won't boot

-------------------------------------

with both modules in dual channel, the errors are a combination of the above.

with the intel board, I got very similar errors, with the module 1 having less, but random errors and module 2 having lots of errors on test 5.

please let me know what I should do.

Thanks in advance,

Cassio

That might suggest some other problem, but since you are getting errors with both MB's let's try replacing your modules.

Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

Do you think I should keep this Asus board to use it with the new modules, or should I return it and stick with my Intel board? Or maybe even get a new motherboard? the store gave me a 7-day money return if it didn't work, so I still could do that (bought it last friday - 12th of Nov).

Thanks,

Cassio

I would keep the ASUS MB, and look for some other cause, like a PSU that might be the cause, as well as when you ran the memory test did you have legacy USB Disabled in the bios? If not I would re-test the modules one at a time with Legacy USB set to Disabled and set the Dim Voltage to 2.75 Volts.

The Legacy USB was disabled, and I tried with 2.75V also... same results.

My PSU is a Maxxtro 500W. I don't know if you know it... it seems to be sold only in south america (I'm from Brazil), according to google's search results. Is there a way to test it, or just by replacing it?

Do you recommend some specific one? I have 2 HDDs, 2 CD drives (one is a dvd recorder), a sound blaster live with that live drive, a floppy drive, radeon 9600 pro, p4 2.6c.

I've already applied for an RMA. If by any reasons they reject it, I'll let you know.

Thanks again,

Cassio

Please make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your MB and load Setup/optimized default settings, and try the following BIOS settings;

CMX512-3200C2

Advanced/Jumper Free

AI over clocking: Manual

CPU Freq: 200

DRAM Clock: 400 MHz

Memory or Dim Reference voltage: 2.75 Volts

System performance: Standard

AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!*

Advanced/Chipset

Configure Dram timing by SPD: Disabled/User define

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5T (2.5T AMD Platform)

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 7T

SDRAM Burst Length: 8

Memory Acceleration Mode: Auto

USB Legacy Support: Disabled

All other settings should be set to default settings!

Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure! Make sure that you do not put any additional PCI card on slot#4 in your system, since it is sharing an IRQ with the AGP card, and this may or may not cause some problem to your system, so to be sure just try to use PCI slot#4 as your last option.

I did the test with those exact settings (except for tRAS, which was set to 8T) and I don't have any card in my pci slot next to the agp card. And my bios is the latest one.

Is there a way for me to test my PSU? I've already disconnected both my CD drives and one of the HD drives to be sure the power was enough and got the same errors.

If it's not the memory, what other issue could it be? It's weird that each module gets specific errors... If they were both fine, I guess the errors would be the same for the 2 modules.

If memtest86 found problems or errors on both memory modules, then I will suggest you to look at other hardware/peripherals installed on your system. I do not think the problem is coming from the memory modules! I didn't say that to make sure you don't have any PCI card installed on PCI slot#1 which is just right below the AGP card, what I said is to make sure you don't have anything on PCI slot#4 which is the second to the last/bottom of your PCI card expansion slot. If it is possible for you to borrow a PSU to a friend or access on a different system which has at least 450Watts or above, but I will highly recommend starting at 500 Watts, then I would suggest you try and test your system with that PSU.

Sorry.. on my Intel board I guess the pci slot sharing the irq with the agp was the one next to it. I'm almost sure my sound card was on #4, but I did a test without it already. I'll check it again tonite.

About the PSU, do you mean REAL 500W? Mine is a 500W, but I have no idea about the real output power. Also, that'd be a bit hard to find and VERY expensive. Can you recommend me some?

Thanks,

Cassio

Checked again and there's no card on slot #4. Also, installed Asus Probe and Motherboard Monitor, ran stuff like pcmark04 and 3dmark03, played a game (Need for Speed Underground 2) and the voltages are pretty stable. Does it mean my PSU is good and shouldn't be the problem?

Still when I had my Intel board installed, I borrowed a standard 256mb ddr 400 module from a friend, tested it and got no errors at all with memtest.

Thanks,

Cassio

Hi again,

I've submitted the RMA request online on that same day and got no answer.

Sent my info to warranty@corsairmemory.com and got no answer.

Then, decided to buy a new PSU. Just installed a Thermaltake Butterfly Pure Power 480W (W0020) and the voltages are way more stable.

But, I got the same errors as before with memtest.

I only didn't change my processor, and that can't be it, since I've tested other memory with it and it worked fine.

Can you track my email requesting the RMA, please? Or maybe I should re-send it and hope someone will reply?

Thanks,

Cassio

Hi again,

just installed the new modules (they were the same, but not PT... guess it doesn't matter).

Ran memtest for like 2 passes and got no errors. (at 3-3-3-8)

Now ran prime95 and got one error after 2 hours... with the other modules, I'd get an error pretty quick.

What can be causing that error, even if only after 2 hours? do you recommend me any settings, voltages? I'm running at 2-3-3-6 dual channel.

Prime95 v23.8.1 and I used the 2nd test (in-place large ffts)

I guess the revision of the old modules was conflicting with my hardware.

Thanks,

Cassio
