emakris
Hello, I have a Tyan Thunder K8S Pro S2882 with 4 sticks of corsair CM72SD512RLP-3200 memory. When I first put the memory in and booted, the post screen displayed a memory r/w failure. So I reseated the memory just in case something was wrong and rebooted, and no error message. I later ran memtest86+ version 1.15 and it came up with 10-15 errors(I don't remember exactly) after a set of overnight tests. I re-ran the test and everything was fine. I reran again and I found some errors. I then proceeded to take modules out and focus on sets of two, but I couldn't isolate the module. I had read that sometimes memtest86+ finds false positives so I then proceeded to make sure that my bios was up to date just in case it was a motherboard compat issue. I updated the bios and reran memtest86 numerous times and everything was ok(meaning no post or memtest86 errors). Some number of months have gone by and this morning, when I booted my server, the post screen displayed a ram R/W error again. I've downloaded memtest86+ 1.30 and am now running tests. I'm not quite sure if I have a bad part since I have used this server sparingly while waiting for FC3 to be released and have not had enough time test to see if a memory fault is present. The reason I think there is something wrong is because of the post message, and the fact that I also have another identical system except that I have 4 sticks of CM72SD1024RLP-3200 memory in that system and I have never had any problems with that one. Has anyone had this experience with this type of Opteron setup and have an issue: - Tyan Thunder K8S Pro S2882 - 2 Opteron 246 - Bios version 2.03 - 2 Seagate 36.7 SCSI with Adapted 2015S RAID - 4 Sticks CM72SD512RLP-3200 corsair memory - CD-ROM and floppy Thanks Ernie
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 15, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 15, 2004 Ernie the errors that you received when you first tested your system with memtest86+ version 1.15 is probably errors on Test#5, which indicates that is either the CPU or chipset is running hot, or incorrect BIOS settings, but since you have Athlon64 CPU, then it is not supported yet on that revision, and 1.3 does support and no problem on testing it. So if memtest86+ version 1.30 found no problem or errors on the memory, then I will suggest you to look at other hardware/peripherals installed on your system. I do not think the problem is coming from the memory modules!
emakris
Thanks for the response. Putting my hand near the memory, I feel some radiant heat. Not very hot, but it is hot. I changed the fans in the system. Its a supermicro 2U rackmount case with four fans. The old fans had half the power. Should I invest in ram heatsinks? Are the memory modules damaged due to any heat issues. The previous fans were still powerfull. Thanks Ernie
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 15, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 15, 2004 This modules doesn't need any heat spreader, it will surely help it, but it is tested to run hotter than the average system temperature of your system. If memtest86 found no problems or errors on the memory, then I will suggest you to look at other hardware/peripherals installed on your system. I do not think the problem is coming from the memory modules!
