K70 RGB LED's Freeze When Pressing Capslock

i think the usb hub needs to be main powered to deliver all the juice needed.

I went for a PCI-E Card that is very similar to the one that you linked. I would go for that one. Can be powered by a molex or sata hdd power cable.

Haven't had one problem or crash since i plugged one usb3.0 cable from the keyboard to the card. Can finally download all these profiles and use them! :) and no need to wait for an updated firmware.

Would be nice to use more than 512 colours however.

Hello, I'm currently having an issue with my 'Corsair Gaming K70 RGB' keyboard, when pressing certain keys on my keyboard the lighting freezes along with the light indicators for 'Num Lock; Caps Lock and Scroll Lock' i'm not sure if this is due to an upgrade to Windows 8.1 or the new Corsair Utility Engine 1.5.80.

Setup:

Operating System: Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit

CPU: Intel Core i7 4770 @3.40GHz

Haswell 22nm Technology

RAM: 10.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @1600MHz

Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. H81M-S2PV

Graphics: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 (Gigabyte)

Storage: 120GB Kingston SSD

1TB Western Digital HDD

Audio: Razer Kraken 7.1 Chroma

I also have a USB Hub 3.0 I have recently purchased to see if this was the problem and the problem still exists with or without the hub plugged in.

This is really sad to see because at the moment i'm not getting what I paid for exactly... I love the keyboard itself but the software is a let down.

Please Corsair. Don't release new Firmwares/Utilities if they are not up to standards and contain bugs.

NOTE: I'm happy to see this is not the keyboard itself as other people are having lighting problems with there devices also, i've also tried switching USB's for people who say it may be that. It's not.

Thank you:(:

Is it recommended PCI-E over Hub?

From what I've read, the USB 3.0 hubs can be used from a USB 2.0 port, which is strange because I'm not sure how the hub gets all the power for half a dozen USB 3.0's out one of USB 2.0 connection.

PCI-E Card I Found

USB 3.0 Hub I Found

Would you suggest one of these? I don't really care about prices, I just want it to work :) I'll check my motherboard when I get home and make sure that card will fit.

I can't speak for the HUB but that is the exact card I have in my desktop and my k70 works perfectly.

I have an AVANTEK 7 slot USB 3.0 hub and the problem still exists, here is the one I have brought myself: HERE

If you find anything to fix please keep us all updated :)

Thank you

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will be picking up the PCI-E card soon. There is one at the store down my street except there is a slight problem. My graphics card is so big that I don't have access to my PCI-E slot. I do not have any PCI-E X4 extension ribbons so I will be ordering one. I will let you know the outcome of the solution as soon as my orders come in.

Cheers!

Have you tried a USB hub already?

Hello, earlier on today I found out the reason for my keyboard freezing and not responding.

I checked over the keyboard/wiring and I noticed the connection into the keyboard was torn and that the wires were on show, after noticing this I moved the cable and noticed a spark on the wiring and the keyboard froze and after a few seconds of having it in this position the keyboard turned off shortly after.

> This is really sad to see because i've only had the keyboard for just over a month and the braded cable and torn and broke the entire keyboard. :(

I know this isn't a solve to you guys but I thought i'd keep you guys updated, I've been given a refund and I've now ordered another Corsair Gaming keyboard but this time I have gone with the K65 for some extra mouse room as I rarely use the keypad.

Thank you

I can confirm that getting a powered usb (3) hub does seem to fix the keyboard freezing issue. Which suggests to me that the keyboard isn't getting enough power from the sockets on your PC.

It also seems to fix the animated profiles stopping when Steam is loaded.

Recently got a new monitor with a built-in powered USB hub. I can confirm this fixes both the random and lock-keys freezes. My next problem is to fix the cable mess it creates. :p:

New solution!!!! :)

Buy monitor with usb powered hub heh.

I've been thinking lately of putting all my cables into a cardboard box under my desk with holes cut in the sides.

The next firmware will resolve this issue as well (eta will be a few weeks from now as long as it doesn't break anything else).

How much will it fiix?

I recently got a new mb and cpu (asus maximus viii hero, 4790k) and my k70 has been way more prone to freezing.

Using a modified version of custom corsair led script by /u/fly-hard my keyboard is even freeziing with my loop delays on updating the LED's set on up to 500 where as my old mb and cpu I could put it as low 1 without any freezing.

(Though I did also have to change this when I used the keyboard on other computers, but that was only up to a 100)

I really hope the new firmware (in 4 weeks or so) fixes all these issues. I just bought the Keyboard yesterday and found this site after figuring out I am not getting 16.8M colors (which is why I bought it as it says it on the box)

I am keeping my fingers crossed!

  • 2 weeks later...
I've tried using one 3.0, two 3.0, and two 2.0 with all the same results :/

Corsair approved my RMA. So very tedious, it has to be a hardware issue because I've now tested it on 3 different machines with all the same result.

Theres some other weird quirks too, the likelyhood of the keyboard freezing seems to align with how intense the profiles are. For example, if I use a flat lighting profile it will never lock up. If I use a very simple reactive profile that just changes the colour and reverts back in a few seconds, i have to try really hard to get it to lock up. If it is more advanced such as strobe or full out animated effects, it will lock almost instantly.

it's definately not hardware because i took mine back to the shop to swap it with another one costing me the 40$ difference of the sale price i bought the first one, but there was no difference still freezing due to caps lock and most of the times steam opening... hope this helps

It's a issues with the USB protocol, there is a fix in bets testing right now and will be out soon.
