K70 RGB LED's Freeze When Pressing Capslock

Its not just Far Cry 4. It happens to me too the same way as it does to you. But if I press "w" + "shift" + and "accidentally" hit "caps lock" it freezes even if I'm on my desktop. So its more the combination of keys that causes the problem. Either way I'm having more problems than that. I managed to find one setting on the bios that was freeze instantly as soo... Just froze while I was typing and accidentally bumped caps lock. God damned am I sick of this thing. I give up.

Same thing here, for me I will just be typing an email and will inadvertently hit Cap Lock and it freezes. Sometimes I can spam the lock keys with no issue and sometimes hitting it once locks it up. Scroll Lock will just about freeze it with one press every time.

Failed. Even updating USB 3.0 drivers failed to correct issue. This is definitely firmware related, or even hardware. Seems like we are a rare bunch who have bad boards.

I doubt it's a hardware issue. It's probably an issue with the interaction of the keyboard and the USB drivers.

Hi there,

Just registered on these forums to say that I have exactly the same problem. Hitting numlock or capslock repeatedly will freeze the lighting effects. Also it appears to happen randomly as well.

I have a fix however. Disable the key lighting in CUE and bob's your uncle you can spam numlock and capslock forever and ever. Good thing I can touch type in the dark. Kind of defeats the object of spending £150 on a keyboard however.

From reading through the threads here where people have the same problem, I don't think there is anything I can do. Just have to wait for a firmware fix. Anyway I have had this keyboard for about 2 months though and it is a joy to type and game with. I just wish the lighting effects would not freeze. Ow well.

I will not RMA yet as I have faith in the CORSAIR team!

Hmm,

Ok this evening I finally had some time to sit down with my home pc and play around with it. I guess I better start off with my basic specs:

Motherboard: Asus Maximus Hero VII

CPU: 4790K

RAM: 16GB

HDD: Samsung SSD EVO 500GB

O/S: Windows 8.1

I am using the latest version of cue and firmware for the K70.

My main issues were that if sometimes randomly, the lighting effects on the keyboard would freeze. I googled and found plenty of people on this forum with the same issue. The only temp fix was to flick the polling switch at the rear of the keyboard.

I was also able to cause the keyboard to freeze by spamming the capslock button or the numlock button.

Anyway, I have had this keyboard for about 2 months now and initially I had no problems but they started to become more and more frequent after I updated CUE and the f/w to the latest as of today.

To cut a long story short, I am here now spamming Capslock and Numlock and I have not been able to get the lighting effects to crash.

From what I remember here is what I did:

1. Update to the latest Intel Chipset drivers. For my motherboard I went here:

http://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VII_HERO/HelpDesk_Download/

I selected my O/S and then downloaded the latest Chipset drivers. It should be noted that before I installed them, the Intel USB 3.0 chipset drivers that were installed were from 2006 and looked like they were the basic drivers that microsoft installed upon installation of windows 8.1. After installing and rebooting the drivers for the USB 3.0 controller stated they were from 2014. I got this information from device manager and clicking on Universal Serial Bus controllers and right clicking on anything Intel based and checking the driver and date.

2. I downgraded from 1.15 f/w to 1.13. You can downgrade from within CUE. Initially I had problems as the upgrade/downgrade would fail. Then a Corsair rep on these forums in another thread stated to connect to dual USB2.0 vs a single USB 3.0 for a more reliable firmware upgrade. Downgrade finally went from 1.15 -> 1.13.

3. Switch back to single USB 3.0

That is it. If I did not fix the lighting crashes tonight I was going to buy a PCI-E USB 3.0 card tomorrow since I have read that that has helped people fix the crashes.

To summarise my combination of fixing the lighting crashes were to do all of the following:

- switch to dual usb 2.0 to downgrade fw.

- downgrade to fw 1.13 from 1.15.

- install the latest intel chipset drivers. I would install the latest chipset drivers for your motherboard. (This brought my driver date for the Intel USB Chipset on my motherboard from 2006 to 2014 for the USB3.0 ports).

- switch back to USB 3.0 single connection.

ps: Google didn't show any links for fw 1.13 but I was able to find links in these forums to people who had uploaded them.

I hope this helps. Still not ideal but at least the thing aint freezing. Maybe I just got lucky with my chipset drivers but I can't be bothered to upgrade my firmware to 1.15 to test it out.

Hello, fellow K70 RGB owners. I would like to share my story very briefly, but before I do I would like to mention that I am experiencing the Lock key(s) malfunction issue on keyboard firmware version 1.12, 1.13, and 1.15, more-so on 1.15.

Setup:

Motherboard: ASUS M4N68T-M

BIOS: M4N68T-M V2 1001 (most current)

Chipset: NVidia Chipset, version 1556 (most current)

OS: Windows 7 Home Edition 64 Bit

USB: 2.0 X4, version 6.1.7601.18199 (6/21/2006), Microsoft

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660

CUE Software: version 1.5.80

Keyboard Firmware version: 1.15 (also tried 1.13 and 1.12)

I've had the keyboard for a month now and always noticed that the lights froze when they were dynamic (ripples, waves, gradients). This seemed to happen randomly and the only way to fix it was to go to Devices and Printers > Corsair Keyboard > Properties > Hardware > USB Input Device (first one) > Properties > Change Settings > Driver > Update Driver > Browse my computer for driver software > Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer > Next. Keep in mind the software was most current (1.5) and the firmware was most current (1.15).

I decided to do a fresh install of Windows because I wanted a clean slate, so I figured "why not get this pesky keyboard working properly while I'm at it". I updated my BIOS and chipsets after Windows did all its updates and such. Now all the drivers I can get are installed at latest versions. The lights don't freeze up randomly anymore, however there is as new issue. When I press a Lock key, the lights freeze. I took the suggestion on this forum to downgrade to 1.13 or 1.12 and it freezes after 20-25 Lock key presses (Caps, Num, or Scroll).

My temporary fix is I mapped the Caps Lock key to a macro which is:

Press down Left Shift >

Delay 90000 ms >

Release Left Shift

I made sure to set the macro to terminate when pressed again.

This "replicates" the functionality of the Caps Lock without freezing the lights. I don't usually use Num Lock or Scroll Lock so I am leaving them alone.

This is very annoying. I LOVE this keyboard, but the firmware is half-finished. This is not complete. This is not acceptable as production release firmware.

I have hopes of a fix in firmware 1.16 or 1.17 and I will wait and see.

Please don't let me down Corsair, I love this product so much and I want to use it without lights freezing every 5 minutes because I could have got a $90 mechanical keyboard with no RGB lights if that is what I wanted...

I'll keep an eye on this forum. Best of luck to us all.

Have you tried using a USB hub or install a PCI-E card? This seems to have fixed the problem for most people using the k70. Worth a shot.

Is it recommended PCI-E over Hub?

From what I've read, the USB 3.0 hubs can be used from a USB 2.0 port, which is strange because I'm not sure how the hub gets all the power for half a dozen USB 3.0's out one of USB 2.0 connection.

PCI-E Card I Found

USB 3.0 Hub I Found

Would you suggest one of these? I don't really care about prices, I just want it to work :) I'll check my motherboard when I get home and make sure that card will fit.
