Help with cooked HAM, I mean RAM...

Recommended Posts

Please, take it easy on the new guy. It's my first ever post here and I just kinda need a push in the right direction in regards to the matter I am about to present to you. My specs should be in my sig, if not, this is going nowhere fast. Anyway, assuming they'll be in the sig, I've been running this rig for about 3 months, very stable.

The CPU ran 15 x 133 @ 2G. The BFG FX5900XT runs pretty much stock clocks except for benching, then stand back. Anyway, so I'm opening a web page the otheer day and the screen locks up. Doing my normal restart, I get nothing. No LED, no fans spinning, nada.

To make an extremely long story short, the PSU blew. After a weekend of testing ALL my components, the only things that didn't burn were the drives and FX5900XT. Everything, when tested in different machines, appears to be shot.

The RAM, which used to run at 1:1 @ 11,3,3,2.5(my MSI mobo loved looser timings) won't even post in any machine. I've tried every slot in every motherboard for like a 20 mile radius, and still nothing there.

I'm really bent about the whole thing and was just wondering about the next steps I should/could/can take. Thanks for your time, any help is appreciated.

Take Care,

Silly

Please make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your MB and load Setup/Optimized default settings, and try the following BIOS settings;

TwinX1024 or TwinX512-3200C2

CPU Freq: 133 MHz (266 FSB)

Memory Frequency: 166 MHz (333 FSB)

Memory Timing: User Define

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5T

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6T

DDR Reference Voltage: 2.7 Volts

AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!*

All other settings are motherboards defaults

Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure!

Ram Guy, thanks for the reply...I never specified but I did have the latest BIOS for my motherboard, version 7.8...And regardless of the PSU's, CPU's and memory I try, the board will do nothing but spin the drives...I believe it to be dead...

As far as running memtest, that's totally out of the question...The modules together, or apart, in any slot, won't even post in any of the 3 machines I tried them in...The timings you suggested do not run or perform as well as the looser timings I used to run them at...When I first built this rig, only about 3 or 4 months ago, I tried every timing and ratio that I thought would increase performance...I used to run it @ 1:1 11,3,3,2.5, which was the best set up for my MSI Nforce2 chipset...

The PSU that started all of this won't even light up an LED... After a weekend of testing every component, the only things that still function are my 3 drives and my FX5900XT...Everything else is as dead as a d**k on a dead man...That's my current situation...

I apologize for any hostility I may convey...My computer blowing up has put me in a rather grumpy mood the last few days

Thanks again for you help,

Silly

I would if you can test the modules in another system, but I have no problem replacing your modules.

Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

Thank You very, very much...I will do as you suggested...This is the first time something like this has ever happened to me and I really didn't know what to think...Seeing that it was the PSU that blew and took everything else with it, I thought I'd be S-O-L... Thanks again for the help...

BTW, this may seem like a stupid question, but is it possible for me to know the results when you receive and test the RAM? Those 2 sticks were the pride and joy of my system, lol...I'm just curious to know if I can find out their fate...

Thanks again,

Silly
