WhiteFang
I recently RMA'd two VS512SDS400 modules due to incompatibility with my Dell Inspiron 8600 Laptop. They didn't even POST, see http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31508. The replacement modules arrived today and they do POST, however I get a memory error at the BIOS screen. Running memtest86+ generates thousands of errors in the first test. I narrowed it down to one module with the problem, the other is testing fine so far. I'd like to request another RMA for the bad module. I'm happy to see such great support for bad modules BTW. I've always chosen Corsair for performance and reability; now I see good reason to continue purchasing it exclusively.
WhiteFang
Unfortunately I spoke too soon. After a longer test the he second module appears to be bad too. It's consistently failing on test 4 of memtest86+ (v1.20). I'll need to RMA both modules. I should note that the original memory included with this laptop passes all memtest86+ tests (tried several passes), so it doesn't seem it's the laptop itself unless it's some specific incompatibility. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 9, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 9, 2004 Can you tell me the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition can you please tell me if you are mixing this with the original memory that came with it?
WhiteFang
It's a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop with a Pentium M 725 processor (1.6Ghz, 400Mhz FSB) with two memory slots. I'm not mixing with the original memory. I first tried both VS512SDS400 modules at once and it failed the BIOS test. I pulled one out and it still failed the BIOS test, as well as had thousands of errors in memtest86+ on the first run. The second module (alone) appeared to be working fine until test 4 of memtest86+ where it detected some errors (this was repeatable). Using the original memory from the laptop it passes all tests. The original memory is two 256MB 333Mhz modules (yah that's how it came and the chipset supports it).
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 9, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 9, 2004 With this notebook and CPU I would suggest you use PC-2100 memory. The part# you should be using is VS512SDS266 but no faster than VS512SDS333.
