RAM Problem

Recommended Posts

I am trying to upgrade to a Corsair 1GB 184pin DDR-Dimm. But when I put the RAM into the second slot and turn on the computer, I get a series of beeps and no video. It is 3 long beeps and I get nothing on the monitor at all. When I take the RAM out again, without moving anything else, everything runs fine. I tried taking the old RAM out, and replacing it with the new RAM but i get the same problem. I'm not sure if it could be video BIOS settings, I dont even know how to get into the BIOS though. My old RAM is DDR so I must be DDR compatible. So if anyone could give me some suggestions that would be nice.

Thanks

by the way im running a P4 2GHz WinXP. i don't know what kind of mobo i have.

Can you tell me the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set? Also what is the part# of all of the memory you are trying to use?

Ok, this is the information I have right now:

It told me this in the BIOS: 400 MHz System Bus, 512 Cache RAM

I don't know how to determine FSB and CPU speed

The new RAM im trying to install is

VS1GB400C3

And my current RAM stick says this on it:

PC2100U-25330

256MB DDR

255MHz CL2.5

Also, I went to crucial.com and it told me this:

256MB out of a possible 2048MB

Gateway 500 series (DDR PC2700)

As for performance settings i have set, i'm not sure what you mean. The only thing I noticed is the BIOS has enabled the option of skipping steps to boot faster.

Im not sure if this is enough information to determine the problem, but let me know. Thanks

I would try with just our modules and enter the bios and just load setup defaults or try and reset the bios with just our modules installed. If you still have problems, please tell me exactly what is happening and do you have another system you can test the modules in? In addition, many of the OEM systems will not support running a faster module than what specified.

I just tried the RAM on my brother's Gateway 510 series (PC3200) and it worked fine.

I also tried loading the BIOS setup defaults on my computer, and that didn't work.

The part about this that interests me the most is, I get no video on the monitor when I boot with the Corsair RAM (It's not loading the video BIOS?) .

When I boot with the Corsair RAM, I get no video, and the computer sounds like it is working (fans turn on, etc.). I hear 3 long beeps (about 1-2 seconds each) and nothing really happens after that.

I don't know if this has anything do do with it, but I just installed a GeForce 6800. It works fine, only reason i'm mentioning this is because I get no video.

Thanks for sticking with me on this, I am clueless and very broke

More than likely the system cannot decode the faster SPD is why it will not post. I would suggest you use a JEDEC compliant module with any OEM system to ensure compatibility. So the part# you should use would be CM64SD512-2700 or CM64SD1024-2700, but they might be hard to find.
