Blue Screen when freshly installing Windows

Dear Hoh:

I recently purchased a barebones system. The specs are as follows:

Intel P4 3.0 GhZ with hyperthreading

2x 512 Mb Corsair RAM sticks

MSI motherboard

WDC 120 GB HDD

NVIDIA FX5500 video card

I put the system together. I would randomly get a blue screen, or the system would crash. I was able to get XP to load. It also looks like some windows components are missing (i.e. in the folder options, most options are missing). I originally thought this was a HDD problem. I had WDC send me a new one. I have also run the Windows Memory Diagnostic. On all tests (INVC, LRAND, MATS+, WINVC, WMATS+, Stride6) it has failed.

The BIOS is recognizing all components.

Please help me. Do I need to replace the RAM?

Thank you in advance.

The part number is VS512MB400 lot # 0437021-0.

I ran memtest on this stick, and it would fail the WINV most of the time, the others some of the time.

The other stick reported no errors.

I have tried placing these sticks in various slots, but same results.

Thank you.

Please make sure you have the latest BIOS installed in your MB and load optimized/optimal default settings, and try the following BIOS settings;

Advanced Chipset:

Bank Interleaving: 4/Enabled

Burst Length: 8

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5T

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 8T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

Frequency Voltage Control:

Spread Spectrum: Enabled

CPU FSB Clock: 200

Memory Frequency: 200

CPU:DRAM ratio: 1:1

DDR Voltage: 2.7/2.75 Volts

All other settings should be set to default settings!

Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure!

BIOS settings are no problem. I ran memtest on each stick individually in the same slot on the motherboard. One passed successfully on 4+ passes, the other failed on 4+ passes. I am currently running the system successfully and stably on one 512MB stick. The other 512MB looks defective. How can I go about getting a new stick sent to me??

Thank you for all of your help so far.

Paul
