Question for ramguy- Possible fraud with 3200XL module ?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have recently purchased a 3200XL 512Mb module from an online retailer I will not presently name. I have installed the module on an Abit AV8-3rd eye along with an A64 3000+ Winchester. I am running the latest bios in the motherboard (v15). The memory timings in the BIOS are set to be configured "BY SPD". The Corsair website clearly states:

"Features Plug-n-FragT technology! Corsair's trademarked technology provides advanced latency values pre-programmed into the SPD (serial presence detect) chip on each module. For the overclocker, this means that the XL modules automatically boot up at extremely aggressive 2-2-2-5 latencies with no additional BIOS tweaking."

Presumably, the BIOS should read the SPD and set the expected aggresive timings which we pay rather expensive. Unfortunately, the timings are only 3-3-3-8, identical to a cheapo OEM or a chaper value branded ram module. The CPU-Z utility reads the module's SPD and reports again 3-3-3-8 as you can see in the attached picture. They are acknowledged as 3200C2!!

This is rather suspicious don't you think?

I have tried to increase the FSB with the slowest timings 3-3-3-8 just to see if the XL sticker makes any sense but listen to this: highest FSB it could run without crashing (didn't even dare running memtest or prime95) was less than 240MHz, while in reviews I've found out that they go as high as 253MHz at 2.5-3-3-6 ( http://www.legitreviews.com/article.php?aid=58&pid=6 ).

What do you think about all this?

Thanks in advance.

It may just be reading the label wrong.

FYI, some boards refuse to automatically set the timings to 2-2-2-5 because they are not JEDEC spec timings (3-3-3-8). Just set them manually to 2-2-2-5 and you should be fine. Some boards need the RAS to CAS Delay at 3 however.

Thank you for your messages. I do agree with you Wired, but even if the m/b does not support CAS3 (it shouldn't cause it's meant to run with agressive timings with A64) why does the SPD read 3-3-3-8? I repeat what I've written in my original post that, Corsair has these values pre-set in the SPD.

Also, I had a look in the full list of memory modules in the Corsair website and surprisingly, I could not find a version of 3200XL with a Platinum heatsink (like the one I got). Is that the case or have I just missed it searching down the list? Can you please confirm that there actually is a 3200XL module with platinum heatsink?

Thanks again,

Zouga

Thank you guys very much for your quick response. Also, thank you for accepting to replace my memory. I am currently waiting for a reply from the store where I bought it, and if they don't appear happy to help me I will follow your RMA instructions. Thanks again for your support.

Kind regards,

Zouga
