SpazzTic
Hey RAM Man! I have a registered DDR 512 stick for a Tyan Thunder K7 that has been working fine for a couple of years -- unfortunately, lately, I have intermittant blue screens upon boot relating to "Page fault in unpaged area". I also noticed the BIOS boot screen registering only 282MB out of 512MB -- a little strange. So I tested the stick using MemTest86, and I got several errors (186) on 4 passes at exactly 282.2MB. I think my RAM is finally bad. Help? edit: btw, i am running latest BIOS -- and have not altered any timing changes or options. This one stick has served me well for almost two years now :)
Wired
What is the exact part # of the memory? What CPU(s) / FSB are you running?
SpazzTic
Hey Wired, First I need to make a couple of corrections: 1) I actually have 2 sticks -- each 256MB. Both are Corsair, same part number, registered DDR / ECC. "CORSAIR PC-2100 CM72SD256 R-2100/M" "014645" "PC2100R-25330-A1" 2) So, naturally, I took out and independantly tested each stick. Stick #1: BIOS reports 109MB, Memtest reports loads of errors at 109MB, and sometimes the computer doesn`t even boot (i.e. bad display, page fault / BSOD, etc.) Stick #2: BIOS reports 256MB, and my intermittant boot problems went away (so far :): ) I also tried this test in different memory slots. I am running AMD Athlon MP`s (true MP`s, none of the modded crap) 2800+ at full 266MHz FSB. I`ll say this is expensive RAM, but I`m glad i paid the premium for the lifetime warranty -- that was the reason I bought Corsair in the first place. No Crucial/Kingston for me :D:
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 5, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 5, 2004 Please make sure that you have the latest BIOS for your MB and load Setup/Optimized default settings, and try the following BIOS settings; CPU Freq: 166 MHz (333 FSB) System Performance: User Define Memory Frequency: 83% Resulting Frequency: 133 MHz (266 FSB) Memory Timing: Optimal DDR Reference Voltage: 2.7 Volts AGP Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!* All other settings are motherboards defaults Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure!
SpazzTic
Are you kidding me? Is anyone actually reading these posts? -- Or should I just call up Tech support? My specs listed a system that does not run at 166Mhz. I stated I had the latest BIOS (even reflashed to be sure). I don`t even have the options in my BIOS to change memory timing and voltage (nor would I even if I could -- this is a production server board, needs to be reliable). Sorry if I sounded curt -- I just feel like I take advantage of a great system for technical support, and then just get pre-typed posts that don`t even apply to me thrown my way. If this is the wrong place to get my module replaced -- just let me know... our organization has been buying Corsair memory exclusively for a while now, and this is the first module to go bad -- edit: btw, i am running latest BIOS -- and have not altered any timing changes or options. This one stick has served me well for almost two years now :) Also, ftp://ftp.tyan.com/manuals/m_s2462_100.pdf -- here is the MB manual.
Wired
FYI, he might have gotten the MP confused with the XP model, as it does have a 333 Mhz FSB IIRC.
SpazzTic
I have to not post @ 8am. Lack of coffee makes me a tool. Sorry bout that. Sitting on hold with Tech Support (India) from several of our vendors makes us suspicious of everyone -- glad to see a real person behind the keyboard. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 5, 2004 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 5, 2004 Let's try and replace the modules, I am sorry we deal with all MB's and this is not one that we play with currently. And the tech who answered this may have not seen this specific MB. Tyan makes a great MB but they do not give you many options to tweak things. At any rate, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!
