Upgrading RAM, Blank screen

I am trying to upgrade my RAM on a Biostar TA790GX A3+ Motherboard. It currently has XMS3 2x2GB in the first two RAM slots, I tried to add XMS3 2x4GB into the third and forth slot, when i turned on my computer my screen stayed blank. I then switched the sticks to 2x4GB in slot 1 and 2, and 2x2GB in slot 3 and 4 to the same effect. I took out the 2x2GB and computer booted fine. Motherboard says maximum RAM is 16GB. Can I not use 2 4GB sticks and 2 2gb sticks?

Corsair advises not to mix ram kits. if you require 4 sticks of ram then purchase a kit that contains 4 sticks.

sometimes mixed kits will work together and sometimes they do not.

I mix RAM (2 kits of 2x4Gb) but these are pretty much SAME modules (all 4 sticks are 4Gb, same speed etc) so these had more chance to work than your 2x2 and 2x4 solution.
