SirAngry
Hi all, Hoping for some useful input on what PSU I should aim to buy for my build. I'll list the components and their wattage below: Intel Core i7-4790K 4.00GHz (Devil's Canyon) Socket LGA1150 ProcessorAsus Maximus VII Gene Intel Z97 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX MotherboardCorsair Vengeance Pro Red 32GB (4x8GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Quad/Dual Channel Memory Kit (CMY32GX3M4A2400C11R)Ares III GPU (yeah I know, but I just had to have one)x2 Spectre Pro 120mm LED fansx1 Spectre Pro 140mm LED fanx1 Spectre Pro 230mm LED fanx3 Samsung 1TB 840 EVO SSDsXSPC D5 Photon 170 Reservoir/Pump Combo So my wattage per component is as follows: CPU = 88wMotherboard = 125w (roughly)Ares III = 580w RAM = ???Water pump = 37wFans (x1 230mm, x1 140mm, x2 120mm) = 12.24wSamsung SSD = 0.1w (x1) / 0.2w (x2) / 0.3w (x3) Total = 845w rounded up But I always go for a PSU that's roughly 120% of system requirement. So 845w x 120% leaves me looking at PSUs in the 1000w range (1012w to be more precise about it). So a few things really: Is there any components I've missed off of my calc's? I'm not using any optical drives.Given this lot is being crammed into a very small space I need a fully modular PSU to help with tidy cables. So brain club please assemble and give me your thoughts on a suitable PSU. Thanks in advance for anyone who takes the time to respond to me. Cheers J
pegotico
I think the minimum psu requirement for the ares 3 is around 850 so you should be thinking between the AX860i , HX1000i and the AX1200i which are super efficient (all platinum)!! Your consumption should be around the 750 watts, and while idle its gonna be much less. By what you said you might want to go with the 1000 or 1200 psu. SirAngry
Yeah, I could possibly make do with the AX 860i, but I'm just not certain. So after much deliberation and hesitation I decided to go with the AX 1200i. Now I've just got to hope I can cram it all into a stupidly small space!!! Thanks for providing a sounding board though. wytnyt
you can send me the Ares 3 and get a smaller PSU:D: agreed the AX 1200i would be perfect for your setup... going modular also allows using only the cables you need.
SirAngry
you can send me the Ares 3 and get a smaller PSU:D: agreed the AX 1200i would be perfect for your setup... going modular also allows using only the cables you need. If I ever go mad and decide to give my Ares III away, I promise you'll be at the top of my list... just to warn you though, that's not very likely. Given the small space I'm attempting to cram this into I really had to go for a fully modular PSU, and I am absolutely going to have to go custom cabling. Hopefully I'm going to be able to jam all this into a Bitfenix Prodigy M case. The maths says it is possible. But with cases the math often lies. I'll let everyone know how it goes via a build log or two.
