Nubiewon
Hey guys, I'm new to these forums and poked around for some help but decided I didn't want to hijack someone's thread so I made this one for myself. I am getting pretty high temps with a 4670k AT STOCK SPEEDS AND VOLTS paired with an h80i on a Maximus Hero VI. Corsair link reports 2250 rpm on the pump and I've tried maxing out fans (fans work and max out at ~2600 rpm) but it doesn't seem to have any effect on the temps at idle or load. I idle at 40C and in Planetside 2 (my most demanding game that I currently play) it shoots up to 72C within minutes. Testing thermals with IBT showed that the temps jumped to 100C in like 2 seconds. I read the forums and some people say that some mobos may be too thin and require rubber washers. I have not really looked into see if there is a gap between my mobo and standoffs yet, but does anyone know from personal experience if the Maximus Hero VI is too thin? Also, is the stock paste on the H80i crap and I should just replace it? I already tried remounting once because I noticed I had backplate upside down but that didn't help at all. Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
HOODedAssault
The backplate may have been your initial issue. You should clean both cpu and block and apply new thermal paste every s time you remove the block. This may be what is causing the problem now. Clean both n put pea size dot on center of cpu then install block holding constant pressure with 1 hand while u install hold down screws with the other. Nubiewon
I will certainly try that once I find the time to do so as well as order some thermal paste. But will that really improve temps by that much? I'm praying for at least a 10C improvement under load. BTW, what thermal paste is good? I'm looking at Arctic Silver MX-4 right now. Is there better? wytnyt
the three most common problems to high temps are mis-mounted backplate,,improper spread of paste or having overclocked and a setting is producing heat even if reverting back to stock clock... HOODedAssault
Mx 4 is very good. That or nt-h1. I kind of like nt-h1 better because it's thicker. The temps with either paste will be identical tho.
Nubiewon
Is there a quick and dirty way to tell if a mount is bad w/o actually having to take everything off and look at how paste is spread on cpu? Just thought it be good to know for future's sake. I'm pretty sure my mobo isn't too think since the block nor the blackplate wiggle or feel loose.
