CMX512-3200C2 and Asus K8N-E Deluxe Overclockability

I just received a pair ofCMX512-3200C2 sticks of ram to replace a pair of Kingmax 512 PC4000. The timings at 250 for the Kingmax was 3-5-5-8 (not the tightest). I bought the Corsair on reccomendation from a friend who said they were pretty stable and OC friendly.

I had the Kingmax running at 235 could have gone higher but required a louder fan on the cpu heatsink.

So far, I have not been able to OC the Corsair at all....The only stable OC I can achieve is a 205...kinda pitiful and not worthwhile....ive tried every timing from 2-3-3-6 to 3-4-4-8 , I've also upped the VDimm as far as it'll go (2.7)...nothing

Do I have a pair of lemons? Or is this normal? Considering the Kingmax was cheaper and had looser timings it could still get me higher overclock than the corsair...I'd be willing to settle for a 220MHz if I could get it...

Help and suggestions are appreciated...

Thx!

You don't have bad RAM but, you do not have RAM that is well suited for OCing, especially when compared to PC4000. Assuming your system will run fast enough on the FSB, PC4000 RAM should run at 250mhz. Your friend actually suggested a slower RAM for you as the PC3200 at stock speed runs at 200mhz.

If you are going to run at or near 235mhz, I"d suggest the PC3200XL as it should easily run 235mhz (not guaranteed by Corsair but I have tested 3 pairs that will). Also, they will run VERY tight timings at this speed. Perhaps your friend can buy the PC3200 C2 from you since he likes it.

Good luck, Mike.

You're disappointed because memory that was designed to do 200 Mhz is only doing 205 Mhz, which exceeds its sales purpose? You can't blame Corsair for that man. If you want to get higher speeds, you need faster memory. Like specmike said, you'd need PC4000, or the 3200XLs, which although aren't rated at 250 Mhz, are made from chips that certainly have the capability to do so.

Wow,

have to say i'm dissapointed with this ram. If Generic Apacer could do 220fsb, and XMS cant even do 210......guess that speaks volumes.

Thx for the advice, guess i'll look elsewhere for OC'ing memory.

What it amounts to is that you were given bad advice by your friend. You won't find any RAM anywhere at any price that is BETTER than Corsair. You may stumble into a bargain now and then with small runs of various RAM but, try to get it warrantied in 1 year, or 3 years. And, there is NO other company with the level of support offered by Corsair.

Good luck in your search. Mike.

My dissapointment lies in comparing the XMS PC3200 to GENERIC Apacer PC3200...i wasn't comparing it to the Kingmax.

Shame a 80 dollar stick of generic ram can overclock higher than a 112 dollar premium stick of ram.

As pc3200 goes, yes, it is good memory. Guess i should have researched further.

This happens occasionally. It was especially true when there were many companies making RAM with the Winbond BH5 ICs. In fact, that is what your friend may have been referring to.

Good luck in finding RAM that you are happy with, both performance and value. If you need anything from anyone here, just post up and we'll try to help.

I have a pair of 3200XL's that are running 2-2-2-11 @ 220Mhz without breaking a sweat. I have run these puppies at 250Mhz @ 2.5-3-2-11, no problem. As for the 3200C2's I have them running right now at 2-2-211 @ 220Mhz for over 1 year, super stable. I would guess it's something else with your system that is causing the OCing issue. Just my tew......

Your results with both sets of RAM are very similiar to my experience. I think you may be correct here odd.

I have the TWINX1024 3200C2 which are the same ones. mine are rev. 3.1 i believe. They'll do 223 fsb at 2.6v 1T. I've tried higher voltage and get errors, no errors at 2.6v go figure. Really good ram but I was expecting higher oc too. But running 400MHz ram at 446MHz ain't too bad either. You might just have a couple of bad sticks. Are they matched pair for dual channel?

I have Twinx 1024MB 3200C2 v5.1 running at 239mhz 5/6, 2-3-3-6 @2.8V. They don`t go faster and they have problem with 220mhz 1:1.

C2 is not good OC memory

No, the C2 is not the best Corsair memory for OCing past DDR400. You would be much better suited with the PC3200XL or the PC4400C2.5. Both of those will run much faster than the C2.

rats!

my memory is HOLDING me back.. ooh!

I picked up this stick hoping I could take my system to new heights, from my Crucial PC3200 stick.. looks like there are too many revisions of this stick to know for sure which ICs you'll be getting..

I could run the Crucial stick @ 203MHz (2.65v), and my new Corsair PC3200C2 v5.1 goes a whopping 5MHz higher (2.7v)

does anyone know what IC's v5.1 has?
