iflo
Hi there, I just got a 4790k and a h100i to keep everything cool (lucky me!) I installed both and got reasonable idle temps of around 30, but using prime temps went up into the high 80s. I stopped at that point. I thought it might be a mounting issue so tightened up the backplate with some o rings and applied some mx4. This has made no difference. I've tried stock fans, noctuas, push and pull but the temperatures still skyrocket in prime. Using the CPU stress test went straight up to high 90s. Yikes! Processor is running at stock speed. Memory is running it's xmp profile. I'm at a loss as to what else to do. Fans are running fine and nothing appears to be working wrongly. Does anyone have any advice. Could it be a dodgy pump? HOODedAssault
It's Haswell. Use something without avx to check load temps. The cpu (not the board) will automatically overvolt by .1v when a program uses avx. So if you have 1.25v stock it will go to 1.35v with avx. If you manually set voltage it will stop this behaviour. Using offset or auto causes this.
iflo
Ah. Awesome, thanks for the reply. I did not know this! I'm not looking to overclock, I just wanted to make sure my temps were reasonable. Is it worth locking the voltage or should I just forget about it and get back to battlefield 4? Just ran Aida64 without FPU (which doesn't use AVX) and temperatures were about 58. This was more what I was hoping for. Thanks again for the info HoodedAssault. I didn't think it would be the CPU causing the problem, so all my searching had been around the cooler. HOODedAssault
No problem. Just get back to battlefield. It isnt really worth locking the voltage unless you use programs that use avx everyday. They are few and far between. Even if you did they wouldnt load the cpu 100% like prime does so you wouldnt get near the temperatures. Just the voltage spike which is fine.
