Win 98 SE & Corsair TwinX-XL DDR PC3200XLPRO

Hi all,

I'm in the process of building new system using Win 98 SE. My Motherboard is Asus P4C800E-Deluxe (Intel 875) and Intel Pentium 3.2GHz Northwood (800FSB). So according to the motherboard manuel, the memory I listed above in title will be suitable. But I'm worried if Windows 98SE works ok with this 'TwinX' RAM? Win98 has issues with ram above 1gb, so this got me thinking about this ram architecture.. maybe I will have trouble with TwinX type ram?

Also, if I were to buy 1024MB Ram, would it boot all the way into windows 98, so I could change the system.ini file to enable me to run 1024mb? I will be installing windows fresh, so if it won't boot into windows I've had it.... I'd rather just get 512mb to save the hassle. Even if it boots up, I've no guarantee I could change the system.ini \ vcache settings succesfully?

Any info much appreciated,

Thanks, Danny.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I suppose on the face of it, it sounds a crazy question... I guess I'm a newbie with computers, and given the memory limitations in win98SE regarding the 1024k limit, I was just concerned about this 'TwinX' architecture running on such an old operating system.

Danny.

No problemo! TwinX isn't an architecture though. It's just a label for 2 sticks that have been pre-tested together. Basically memory is made to run at certain timings when alone. Since they're not designed for running in pairs specifically, they may not run at the same timings when paired together. That's why Corsair pre-tests 2 at a time at the single stick timings. If they pass, they get labeled as TwinX. That way no one has to go through the hassle of buying 2 single sticks that they may have to fiddle with to get running.
