harryhoudini66
Hello everyone, I need help with my third Mini ITX build. Ironically, this is the largest so far but am having issues with cooling. Details below. The problem I have relates to the backplate used for mounting the Corsair H100i to the processor. There is quite a bit of movement. Not the kind that is side-to-side and therefore acceptable but up and down. The cooler is not making good contact with the CPU. It sticks a little but that is because of the thermal grease mostly. I already double checked to make sure I have the plate orientation is correctly to account for the notches. I have mounted the cooler about four times now with the same results. So the question is as follows. Does anyone know the specific washer or o-ring size that I would need to mount the H100i and minimize the movement? On a side not, I find it frustrating that neither Corsair nor MSI are addressing this issue. In my research, I found that Asus includes washers with their Mini ITX board for this precise reason. Mobo: MSI Z97 AC Cooler: H100i Case: Obsidian 250D Link to Asus which includes information on how washers are needed for mounting some backplates. Installation washers included* For convenience and the widest backplate compatibility, Maximus VI Impact includes four installation washers. * Washers required only if you encounter installation difficulties. http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/MAXIMUS_VI_IMPACT/
LangZone
You could try rubber washers that are 4mm in diameter and 2mm thick. As per: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=112940&page=

Any place like Home Depot may have them?
LangZone
I'm sure a hardware store can set you up on the cheap. Also you can take the screw/stand-off with you and just ask an employee for a rubber washer that fits. (In case these sizes are wrong).

harryhoudini66
Okay, could not find the correct size nylon washers. I went to three different places too. I did have some o-rings from my paintball kits. I used those and it helped but I dont think as well as washers would have. The temp at idle is 40 and when gaming about 65-70. The stock cooler was hitting 60 on idle and 75-80 on full load.
LangZone
Yeah it should be better for sure. You can always look online to buy them in bulk on amazon or ebay.

Yeah I purchased some. I just hope these work. I was not sure which so I got different ones. http://www.frozencpu.com/products/16980/scr-354/Anti-Vibration_Rubber_Washer_-_Black_M4.html http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=60_237_1170&products_id=32553 http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=60_237_1170&products_id=468 Also these since they appear close to the ones used by Asus on the Impact Mini ITX http://www.performance-pcs.com/catalog/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=32695 I also got some new paste just in case. I used Artic Silver 5 last time. http://www.amazon.com/ARCTIC-MX-4-Carbon-Based-Thermal-Compound/dp/B0045JCFLY/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1403707573&sr=8-3&keywords=arctic+thermal+paste Anyone know if there is a mounting bracket out there that may work better with the h100i? harryhoudini66
Okay, I was able to find some washers at a mom and pop store. In installing them it looks like the o-rings I had before were too old. They crumpled. I installed two washers per screw. The temps are better although still high in my opinion. I am idling at about 36c and full load is 65c. Now I understand that the Haswell runs a little hot so is this normal? I am not going to obsess over getting a 28c on idle and 50c on full load. However, when I get the MX4 I will use that and see if it improves anything.
wytnyt
you wont get 28c on idle and 50c on full load. on a 4770 chip as its a hot chip. your temps of about 36c and full load is 65c is actually slightly above normal,,and idle temps are not that important as load temps are.my 3770 is at 41 at ldle but i do keep it hot in my room... LangZone
I agree with wytnyt, your temps are totally fine. (My 3570K idles around 34 degrees in a 20 degree room). Don't fall down that rabbit hole of "this one guy this one time said it was this and others agreed so mine has to be the same!" you'll drive yourself crazy. Enjoy your build! harryhoudini66
Thanks guys. Now I just need to replace the stock H100i fans as they are loud. Going to get some Noctuas. Besides the radiator fans do people also switch out the front 140mm fan?
sandstorm1
plus it takes a bit for the thermal compound to set in. once it does temps will drop a tad.
LangZone
The front fan in the 250D is a variant of the retail AF140 called the AF140L (essentially same specs but no color rings and rubber corners). I love the AF140 and the AF140L as they are a great mix of performance to low noise. If they are too loud you can undervolt them pretty easily I believe they will start operating from anything as low as 5 volts. I run all of my fans at 7 volts. harryhoudini66
Noctuas installed and what a difference. No more loud fans. Even when on full load. These things are great. No wonder so many people talk them up.
harryhoudini66
Idle temps are now down to 32c.

No wonder so many people talk them up. quite frankly if your noctuas are quiet while running full rpm then their going to be inefficient for hydro cooling.. with good static pressure naturally will breed noise it takes a good static pressure to push air thru a rad most corsair hydro fans have around 4mm sp and the lower sp,,the less cooling

wytnyt
yes those are good temps i didnt mean to say they wouldnt cool but just that not as well under max conditions.,,you most likely will be ok as most never tax their systems like bench tests do where good sp fans come into play is when things are loaded hard,,temps stabilize and dont gradually creep up after a long stress...
