Bad Module - CMX256A-3200LLPT

Recommended Posts

Dear RAM guy,

I believe I may have faulty module and would like to run my findings past you before requesting an RMA.

Firstly, the important system specs:

Memory: (2 x 256Mb) CMX256A-3200LLPT

Motherboard: Intel D865PERL

Processor: Intel P2.8 Prescott (800Mhz)

My initial problems arose when I first built the machine around 4 weeks ago, when I was unable to get the machine to boot using the two modules in dual-channel mode. After a few hours of head scratching and a few more hours reading your recommendations on this forum I prevailed in finding a solution. All that was required was a motherboard BIOS upgrade to version P19 (the latest available) and ensuring the BIOS settings were set to default.

Following these changes the system succesfully booted and has passed numerous checks with memtest+ and memtest86 diagonostic applications. At one point the machine completed almost 48 hours of testing with the above mentioned applications. Maybe a little over the top, but better to be safe than sorry.

The machine since has worked perfectly without error (around 3 weeks) up until two days ago when the machine crashed and refused to boot with both modules installed. I have tried booting with only one of the modules in place and has worked fine, when swapped with the remaining module, no go. The machine simple refuses to boot, though all devices power up, no information is displayed in screen and no access to the BIOS is permitted.

Following all the resources available on this forum, I believe I've exhausted all the possibilities of resolving this issue without resorting to an RMA. If I may have overlooked anything please feel free to share.

I would try and manually set the timings to Cass 2-3-3-6 and see if the MB is more stable or will pass http://www.memtest.org. However, with these modules, I would also suggest you set the Dim Voltage to 2.7X Volts, and since many of the Intel boxed MB's do not allow you to set the Dim Voltage replacing the modules may not solve the problem. I would suggest if you still have problems, maybe testing them in another system to be sure. But I have no problem replacing them if you like!

Having tried adjusting the memory settings to 2-3-3-6 as suggested, I still have no luck in getting the machine to boot with what is believed to be the faulty module.

I don't believe this problem is one of fine tuning or correct settings for stability but more of a case simply trying to get a broken module to work. As mentioned, this machine has worked beautifully for almost 3 weeks once initial teething problems were worked out. I guess I've just managed to be subjected to a little bad luck with one of the modules.

Two other questions though. As I live within Europe, will an RMA still be accepted? I've noticed that the return address for RMAs is an US address. And will I be able to return both modules and expect two new (and obviously compatible) modules in return, even though it is just one of them that's faulty?

One other small point:

"I would also suggest you set the Dim Voltage to 2.7X Volts, and since many of the Intel boxed MB's do not allow you to set the Dim Voltage replacing the modules may not solve the problem"

If the above is true, why are the CMX256A-3200LLPT modules on the recommended list for my Intel D865PERL motherboard?

Can you please try to test the module in a different system or in a friend system if possible, just to confirm if the memory module will able to boot up or not, and to make sure its not some other issue! After confirming this and If the system still can not boot; then I will suggest we get it replace.
