toddnunez94
Hey everyone. I recently purchased 2 sets of SP120 PWM High performance twin pack fans (bought 1 about a week before the other). When the first set came, I installed them under my H100i for a push pull config, with the stock fans on top (mounted on top in exhaust). Then, when my second set came in, I removed the stock and put on the new SP120's. Here's my issue... I noticed an extremely annoying rattling sound coming from the fans. After 20 minutes of frustration and checking it out, I realized it wasn't the fan, but the vibration from the middle of the fan and the case. The fan on the right is snug against the top, but the left fan has a little bit of room between the top (not snug at all). Whenever I push down in the middle of the fan from outside the case, the vibration/rattling goes away. But when I remove my finger, it starts up again. Does any of that make sense? I'll upload a picture of what I mean. No matter how tight I screw the fan in, there is still a tiny gap in the middle of the fan and the case. I tried sticking some paper in between to fill the gap, and it a little bit quieter, but I can still notice it. Why is there a gap, when the other fan right next to it is nice and snug against the case? In the photo, i did the best I could to show the gap. I hope I am making some sense, to make it easier to understand what I'm asking. Please help me out
kenz_aps
Hey todd, Do you experience the same with fans doing pull? I have the same issue as I posted in this thread: http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?p=715623#post715623, so I will gladly hear from you, whether the problem you have is the same as I do. (you state in your thread that the vibration comes from the fans in the pull config. Mine is push)
toddnunez94
Try and update the firmware. I just built my first computer, so I'm not exactly an "expert" :) However, try and see if that fixes the issue. You said in your other thread that you returned them and got a fresh pair... I would assume that maybe the retailer has gotten a bad batch. In my case, I realized that one fan in each of my twin packs (I purchased two sets) were both making the "grinding/bird chirping sound". My only guess wold be a bad batch, because I purchased mine from amazon about 4 days apart from the first order I made (I ordered mine at different times). A few days ago I opened a ticket for an RMA, and I just got approved last night. I'm taking my fans to the post office in a few hours, so I'll let you know if a new set will have fixed the issue. Btw, try and take the fan out of the case, and hold it up to your ear... I did that with both my fans, and I was hearing that "sound". That's why I opened up an RMA. -Todd
LangZone
I assume you mean because the case of the fan itself isn't touching the top. I have 3 of the AF140L's up top (2 on a h110 and 1 intaking) and none of mine touch and I have no issues. I did however have this issue with another fan I originally had up there but it turned out to simply be an issue with the fan's bearing.
toddnunez94
How do you have 3 140mm up top, when it only supports 2?
kenz_aps
LOL. I just realized what was wrong. I tried to put pressure on the top where the dust filter is positioned, and it turns out that it is that part of the case that rattles whenever the rpm rises under load when booting/rendering/gaming. In other words it is the grill of the case causing the sound, due to vibration on the thin surface. Do you have any idea how to stabilize the weight of the surface without preventing the air to be blow out of the top?
toddnunez94
That was the problem I had too. But then I also had a bad bearing on my fan in pull (exhaust). It's basically the fan rubbing off the top of the case. I tried sticking paper Stubbs between the middle of my fan and the top, but the sound was still there. So I'm not quite sure about how to fix it. That's why I also posted this, because I had the issue too
LangZone
How do you have 3 140mm up top, when it only supports 2? The 750D will take 3 140mm fans in the top it has the mounts. One will be kind of above your 5.25 bay. Still good for exhaust, or intake as is my case since I have my 3.5 drives mounted in my 5.25 bay with brackets. toddnunez94
Hey Kenz. I seem to still have the issue. I received my replacement SP120, and im still getting the rattleing sound. My only guess is my H100i. That seems like that is the problem. I just sent a message to customer support, to see if they can deal with it. this is my third h100i since February, and im tired of having to pay return shipping. Im hoping they will pay for it this time.
toddnunez94
Turns out it has to do with the SP120 PWM fans. Once they start up, and around ~1300RPM, the fans will begin to vibrate, or they will basically "shake". I know that sounds weird, but I never have any problems with the AF fans... Only the ASAP. Once they start up, and around ~1300RPM, the fans will begin to vibrate, or they will basically "shake". I know that sounds weird, but I never have any problems with the AF fans... Only the ASAP. I know this is an old thread, but I just added two AF140's on top of my 750D and had the same vibration issue. The fan closest to the front of the case was causing the issue. When I press on the grill lightly above the fan it would stop, or if I pressed on one of the rubber grommets that are already built into the case it would stop. It didn't matter which grommet. I tried tightening the four mounting screws more, no help.. I finally decided to loosen them up a little at a time until finally it stopped. I think the already installed grommets that aren't used in this case are the issue. the fan towards the back does not come into contact with them. If the front 4 screws are too tight, the fan that does touch the grommets, it forces a bulge on the grill as the screws pull on the fan causing pressure on the grommets which causes the slight bulge and vibration. toddnunez94
I figured out the problem. It has to do with the type of bearing. When the fans are mounted horizontally (top of case), they give off a rattling sound.no matter what I did to solve them, I couldn't do anything. I'm in the middle of ANOTHER RMA, and this time they are testing them. So it all has to do with the way they are mounted. Grommets won't fix it.
