H80i how to lower fan rpm?

Hi everyone!

I just got myself a brand new H80i for my FX-8350.

Everything seems to be fine except that I can't lower the fan speed to under 1800 rpm no matter what I do in Corsair Link (even on idle CPU), which makes it rather noisy.

I bought a pair of High Performance Edition High Static Pressure 120mm fans and I use them instead of the stock ones, but I don't think these can cause this problem... or can they?

I also re-installed Link, and firmware is updated as well. Hell, I even re-installed my OS since I was planing anyway...

So does anyone have any idea why this is happening? Am I missing something? :dunno:

I haven't tried the stock corsair fans... might give it a try, but I think the stock fans are also High Performance Edition High Static Pressure 120 mm fans like the set I bought. I only bought them for the red "ring" since my build is based on red/black colors.

I'd say it's highly likely. Most fans that aren't running PWM tend to use default speeds if just attached to the mobo as it's the only way to control the voltage without additional hardware.

I would have assumed the cpu block could have controlled the voltage though - the best way to check is try your PWM fans out. If they don't change speed then it's an issue with the cables or the cooling block.

Ok so I can confirm this was the reason. Fan RPM is completely configurable with PWM fans.

I bought a couple of PWM High Performance Edition High Static Pressure 120 mm fans and they work like a charm.

In "Quiet mode" they go down to 900 RPM which makes them very silent, while in "Performance mode" they go to +1800 RPM which (although quite loud), keeps my cpu under 55-60 C even at 100% load (AMD FX-8350 @ 4.4 Ghz).

Conclusion, if stock fans are PWM you better buy PWM replacements fans... I learned my lesson now!

Anyway I am absolutely satisfied with the H80i.

Tbh it's almost always worth getting PWM fans - the price difference isn't that big a deal and it's always better to be able to fine-tune fan speeds. Odds are that if you're going through the fuss of installing new fans then you're the type of person who'll benefit from the PWM feature.
