mygonads
Hey everyone Been using a HX1050 Gold since december and it's been awesome, but since installing a GTX780 Superclocked I have noticed some buzzing, fast clicking/ticking and some worrying fizzy/short circuity kind of noise when playing certain games. Watch_Dogs causes the fast ticking (sounds almost like a fan with an obstruction), Wolfenstein causes a fizzy/crackly kind of noise but it's fairly quiet. At first I thought the sounds were from the GPU but now after having a few friends round it is definitely the PSU making these noises. Is this anything to worry about? The fan on the PSU is working fine and it doesn't kick out hot air or anything to suggest it's getting too hot and it hasn't showed any other issue like powering off etc, it is also totally silent in games like Assetto Corsa or on the desktop. It comes with the 7 year warranty but I'd prefer not to RMA unless I really need to, I'm fairly new to building PC's so I'm not sure if these PSU's are supposed to be silent or not. mygonads
Any takers? Not sure if it's normal or not.

Corsair Employees jonnyguru Posted June 8, 2014 Corsair Employees Share Posted June 8, 2014 If it's a noise coming from the fan, it could be one of two things: 1. Make sure there are no wires that the fan blades could be hitting. You should be able to do this w/o opening the unit. Just use a flashlight and something long and skinny that can go between the fan grill and fan blades. MAKE SURE THE UNIT IS UNPLUGGED BEFORE YOU GO POKING IN IT!!! 2. The hub of the fan might have come loose from the base. Just take a pencil, eraser side, and push down on the hub as hard as possible to re-seat the fan. If the noise isn't fan noise, I'd just RMA the unit. Nothing you can do about it yourself.

Thanks for replying, I think I actually bought this power supply based on one of your reviews. The fan sounds fine, as when it gets put under load the fan spins up and sounds smooth This is a strange issue whilst under load in certain games, regardless of the PSU fan being on or off. In Wolfenstein I can hear an electrical buzzing/fizzing right from the exhaust of the power supply, if I pause the game the noise stops instantly. In Watch_Dogs I get a weird ticking noise after I've been playing for say half hour, I thought it was a lose fin on the GPU cooler but now I know it's coming from the back of the PSU. It isn't very loud but it can be a bit worrying sometimes, just wondering if it's anything to worry about or not. It seems to pump out a very stable voltage of 12.13v to 12.14v at all times according to a multimeter
Corsair Employees jonnyguru Posted June 9, 2014 Corsair Employees Share Posted June 9, 2014 If you're 100% sure the noise is coming from the PSU, RMA it.
mygonads
It sounds like it, I'll see if I can pluck up the courage to fire it up outside the case away from other components without breaking anything or shocking myself. Never had to RMA anything before, don't have a spare PSU so was hoping I was worrying about nothing, the noise isn't at all loud but I know it's there now. Thanks a lot for the info, I'll get on that in the morning. Ta very much.
mygonads
For an advanced RMA they want to put a hold on something like £150 from my account until they recieve my noisy PSU, but I'm broke at the minute so are these noises anything to worry about? I can live with the noise as long as it isn't an indication I have a ticking bomb inside my PC, just until I can raise enough for a replacement unit. From what I see online I'm most likely going to end up with another noisy replacement anyway from corsair so I'd rather not go through the trouble if it's not likely to go bang in the first place. It sounds similar to these but only in certain games like Skyrim, Hitman Absolution, STALKER, Watch_Dogs. It is completely silent in Assetto Corsa, GTA IV, Arma 2/DayZ, Arma 3, BF3, BF4, GRID; Autosport, Flight Simulator X, X-Plane 10, War Thunder etc etc etc. [ame] [/ame] [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_v48DEhPuNs[/ame] [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_IeKQZQm54[/ame] Cheers
Corsair Employees jonnyguru Posted July 5, 2014 Corsair Employees Share Posted July 5, 2014 It's nothing to be concerned about. Just potentially annoying.
mygonads
It sure is annoying, I tend to associate those kind of noises with an electrical appliance that's about to tear itself a new one. Can you recommend any particular PSU to buy and then keep this HX as a backup in case it does get overly annoying?
Corsair Employees jonnyguru Posted July 5, 2014 Corsair Employees Share Posted July 5, 2014 An RM1000.
mygonads
An RM1000. Amazon UK are giving me a full refund to purchase a new power supply and are letting me keep this noisy 1050 until my new one arrives. I know you recommended an RM1000 but I've seen some reviews also saying these aren't always that great, cheap caps and crappy fans etc. Is there any truth to this? You take these things apart and test the crap out of em don't you? So what would be the highest possible quality power supply you could recommend for me in the region of £150 - £200? I'd prefer some headroom to run SLI 780's of some description in the future so I'm guessing I need at least 750/850W.
Corsair Employees jonnyguru Posted July 30, 2014 Corsair Employees Share Posted July 30, 2014 I've never seen a review that said the RM fans were "crappy". Not sure how someone could even come to that conclusion. The caps aren't "Japanese brand", and unfortunately some forum armchair techs consider that a bad thing, but I've seen the cap life study on those caps and they're perfectly fine for at least 5 years of use at full load. mygonads
Ok thank you, I'd looked through some of your reviews but didn't see one for the RM1000 so thought I'd ask the question. For what I use it for I'm sure it'll be fine, just hope it's quieter than this 1050
