Dismantled ASUS RT-AC68U back cover painted

After dismantling the RT-AC68U, I decided to work on the rear panel first.

First coat was Matt White which I gave a good 3 - 4 layers of paint before moving on.

After painting the base coat Matt White, I masked the panel and cutouts and began to work on the details which are the red accents.

I chose Scarlet Red for the red accents for the rear panel. As the base coat was Matt White, I will just need 2 coats of Scarlet Red for the accent.

After painting the rear panel, I coat the panel with a coat of matt lacquer. The coat of lacquer would be able to protect and prevent the paint from peeling.

Internal components of ASUS RT-AC68U

The internals are pretty simple, a large PCB with two huge heatsinks on both sides. I did consider changing the LEDs to white but the LEDs aren't those LED bulbs and they don't seems to be too mod friendly either. So I dropped the idea of messing the PCB since this RT-AC68U have to be in working condition when returned.

After all painting on the rear panel and the router stand were done, its time to fix them back.

Front Panel of ASUS RT-AC68U

The initial idea was to paint the front panel full white and the ASUS ROG logo in Scarlet Red. But scraped the idea since ASUS will be releasing ASUS RT-AC68U White Knight soon as well.

So instead of painting it full Matt White, I decided to reverse it. Full Scarlet Red with White ASUS ROG logo.

After sanding the surface of the front panel to prep for the paint coating, I masked the ASUS logo a the front panel to ensure no paint stains on the beautiful logo.

I first painted the front panel few thin coats of Matt white as a base layer first before layering another 3 layers of Scarlet Red. Lastly, finish it off with two layers of layers to protect the red shiny surface.

Beside painting the front panel, I had to use dremel to create some holes for LEDs to pass through. As the original panel is semi translucent and LEDs are able to pass through even though its a solid panel. But since I be painting the panel, the LEDs won't be able to pass through due to the multiple coats of paint.

Here is the end result of the front panel.

Using Adobe Illustrator, I created the labels for the ASUS RT-AC68U. I created multiple color scheme to match the theme. Finally I chose the darker shade of red label for this build.
