?new memory for build

Hi all,

I have a new build in progress: i7 4930k and MB: Asus X79-Deluxe. I think I might want to upgrade the memory to take advantage of this systems performance.... the old box had 16 G ram: 4 pieces of Life Time 4GB DDR3 1333 uDIMM (PC3-10600) ... pricey memory but the audio guys promote it as super stable but I think that is mostly hype and want to try some faster memory.... This is for a Pro Tools 11HD professional recording rig..

I am a sound engineer and know enough about PCs to be dangerous...

I will likely disable turbo speeds and c states (in the bios) for the cpu as this is reputed to cause pops and clicks in the audio... although I will test that before I leave it disabled... my guess is I will end up there...

the 16 gig of ram is enough for pro tools, but I might want to double the amount in order to add Avid Media Composer to this box...

Any comments or help would be appreciated...

to clarify, when I said I know enough about PCs to be dangerous... I hope you understand I meant "only" enough to get myself in trouble...

I guess what I am asking is for comments about memory speed and stability trade-offs. Pro Tools is notoriously unstable on its own... I notice the Dominator Platinum comes in various speeds...

Hi

I guess what I am asking is for comments about memory speed and stability trade-offs. Pro Tools is notoriously unstable on its own...

for memory speeds, i have found through my own experimenting, that there are brackets of speed/performance and the reliability/stability to each

if you've been using 1333 then i recommend an immediate upgrade to at least 2133

you will see an immediate and undeniable improvement in mouse screen response "snap"

16 gigs is enough to run pro tools with all 128 tracks

i would ofc hope that you were using a motherboard with a ESD separator for the audio chip

however for full use of all the features of media composer you would need another 16 gigs.. then ofc u would want windows to remain stable , another 4 gigs

as you see its at 36 ish gigs of ram already

so instead ill say that i use Qbase aCiD and Cakewalk

with 32 gigs of 2k+mhz memory and im fine, i dont know your personal needs, but going with a x79 system for 64 gigs of ram sounds professional and you would be using a Xeon

any way

tl;dr version

get 32 gigs of 1866-2400 memory from something in dominator

its stable, the rma process is friendly , and its bling

it seems to ve enough for my own needs
