H100i CPU Fan Error

Speedi

Recommended Posts

This morning, when I got up to come down and do some work, I get a nice message from BIOS telling me that there is a CPU Overheat error -- it looks like the machine basically shut down processor usage, although the temps in BIOS were really high. After leaving the machine off for about 30 minutes, I booted it up and it tells me there is a CPU Fan Error and stops POST. I enter the BIOS and see that the CPU temp is on the rise.

Given that I can't really get into the PC to do any diagnosis (i7-3770K) and since I don't have another cooler..I think my options are very limited. I know I've had this cooler for less than a year, since I built my machine back in May 2013, and this is a retail box, but what can I do at this point? This machine is dead until I replace this device.

Suggestions?

No doubt you have already done this, but the first thing I'd check is that the connector from the block to the CPU fan header is connected, next would be to see if the pump is actually running. This would be easier with a spare PSU that you could hook to the power cable of the block, and listen for the pump to spool up when the power is turned on. As you say the system overheated and shut down, sad to say, my first suspect would be the pump having gone out, and unless I am mistaken, it also sends back a signal to the CPU fan header to let it know it's running. If you have a spare fan to connect in place of the block, and it runs, to me, this would indicate an issue with the pump motor or circuitry in the block.

If you haven't already done so, I would suggest submitting a support ticket. From personal experience I have found the support group to be very helpful, but it may take a few days to get a response. Might be able to get in touch with a rep by way of live chat, or with a phone call.

Are your fans spooling up, or starting to before it shuts down?

assuming you have done no recent alterations to the system and it was running ok,,,

try tapping on the block as you power up and see if theres a change in rising temps

Good question.. and no changes were made to the system. I also powered off for a while and tapped on the block as the PC was booting, no success. I looked in BIOS and it says NA next to the CPU Fan Speed. Interesting that my H50 is still working after about 6 years. My H100i is dead until I get the replacement - I had zero trouble from it until this fatal event. Hope the next one is as good as this one. :[pouts:

I know I should have some spare parts, and I do, but the spare parts I have are OLD - the PSU I have here won't fire this machine up. Don't have extra fans laying around -- I try to not have too much PC junk piling up after assuring my builds are solid, so I either sell the equipment or take it to BestBuy to recycle.

As I stated in another post, the Asus BIOS tells me the fan is not running (NA), which really means the pump is not running as it's connected to the CPU header and SATA connector for power and registration.

I love the Corsair forums.. they are the most helpful of almost any hardware vendor. I gravitate toward these folks just for this reason when buying components -- they are enthusiasts as well! :D:
