Recommended Posts

I have my first component on its way for a custom loop build that i plan on building here as i proceed

the reason i call it ''Grease-Monkey'' is because ill lack all the high tech tools needed but will be doing this build mostly by hand-as in old school

anyways heres my first bought component.

Looks like a great build. Only thing thats a little iffy to me is the motherboard. Theres newer asus motherboards like mine that solve some of the issues the original x79 boards had. Like vrm throttling when overclocking and stuff. 4930k should be alright as itll use less power than the 3930k I was using. As long as your not going for like 1.4v+ it shouldnt be an issue anyways. I simply placed a 80mm fan above the vrm hs. Or since you've already spent so much anyways.

Finally after waiting for my workload to slow down and gathering parts I am actually beginning to make a little progress on my build

first let me say that while most builds show the eye candy shots [what we all want to see]

Ive decided to post both ends of the build, that being the money shots and also pics of my build as i progress even showing the ''bloopers'' along the way:D:

Hopefully i can show other potential builders a few good idea's;): on how to do their build and even more important....what not to do

heres a couple shots of my rads after scuffing and fan rings

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2935_zpsf89393d5.jpg

i only had a 2 hour window being able to use the paint booth which included setting up,painting and having the parts out

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/29625_zps6e841204.jpg

even tho i used an accelerate to speed dry the paint,i found when moving the parts they were still somewhat soft and tacky

you can notice that underneath the fan screws there is no paint as i didn't want the radiator cores to have any restriction due to the painting so i sprayed from the outer sides towards the center of the radiator ...

ok,as promised allow me to show my biggest duh moment blooper so far but first let me say ive done paint/body work since '78 and have worked on most everything made

i reduced my 2 5.25 drives down to 1 1/4 bays and decided to rattle can it a semi-black,,i bought a couple good brand of paint so here i go doing the usual shake rattle routine to mix the paint, then decided to go get a glass of tea before spraying

once spraying and having dried it came out as shown

trying to figure what went wrong

i realized

I picked up the wrong can and not the one i shook up:o:

I have another small mod being done to the Psu location as i need to move it in order for the chamber side sheet metal to properly align.

this will also give well needed space to tuck away all of the rat nest wiring

I decided to glue the metal instead of other available methods.the particular bonding i used is called Fusior, which bonds so well if pulled hard enough the sheet metal will rip before the glue separates...

here i scratched the paint to provide good adhesion ...

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2926_zpsf55101f0.jpg

I taped the underside to avoid any dripping of the glue and also keeps a smoother surface for less sanding when dry

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2927_zps0cffac10.jpg

placing the metal and pressure clamping it

my pliers couldn't get the proper bite so i added a ''specialty'' tool designed for this purpose ;):

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2932_zpse4c6606c.jpg

a very important step to note is to make sure the tips of the pliers have been lubricated to avoid being bonded also,I used Vaseline...

Ive got another small step done i thought id share

this pic is the upper fans where it was cut out.,Ive realized that most any cutting here really weakens the case structure.

Initially i had planned on using 2 straight angled brackets but that would have have put the integrity of the case right to the radiator.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2997_zps367f2cfe.jpg

so I came up with bracket below and must say the case is likely stronger than ever

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2800_zps2d50d564.jpg

heres a shot of the front fan cutout,,I'm using a flat brackets here ,fortunately as the isn't enough room for an enclosed one

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2998_zpsb4a4ff78.jpg

this is the front fan bracket

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_2955_zpsad5b000b.jpg

heres a pic of moving the Psu 5/16'',I must say getting these screw holes has been the hardest 1's so far

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_3000_zps6bec8f22.jpg

Im still debating on if I should smooth the Psu area more,,,but it is the case rear;):

all i did to get the memory purring was enable xmp,the 780 had no video and ended up having to do a bios update but had me stumped till i connected my other video card and had the same results.the cpu fan is a $20 el cheapo i got just to get everything done before going to water.

matches tho huh:D:

Lol made me look twice because I didn't even think intel made coolers for x79. Or do they come with 3820 or something ? I know 4820k and 3930k don't because I've owned them... You better check your vccio voltage or cpuvtt. Whatever it's called in your bios. When i enable xmp my cpuvtt goes to 1.3v and as far as i see more than 1.25v is not safe. I'm running mine at 2400 with 1.1v. You have more sticks tho so you may need a bit more. Don't want you to fry that cpu because of asus wonderful auto settings lol.

Got a little ''what is it'' for the avid builder

let me say this,it has to do with leds and as shown in the pic by the black line

this is where ill be cutting it to make 2 ''items''

one pic is topside and the other is the underside

of course its unfinished and fresh out of a fiberglass mold.

:D: ok, so its a ''hood'' to cover the chamber side leds that highlights the 2 Evo 240 ssd's that im putting there.

i thought guessing it would be easy...

ordered 2 of these at 9 pm and lightning fast delivery got em here already:D:

finally had a few minutes to work on my build so i figured id accomplish the hardest most painstaking part of this entire build

the mounting of the Link Commander:D:

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e152/wytnyt123/IMG_3034_zps607fc311.jpg

getting the wiring isolated enough to have room for the res and pump was tricky but having the 5/16'' of space behind the PSU made it all possible..

the only wiring left is the Link nodes, this build has 3 ssd's and 2 front side full drives

I cant secure the ssd's till Ive painted the upper panel so I figured Id do my dual boot and get the drives in a Raid

easy sit down work...;):

I have my first component on its way for a custom loop build that i plan on building here as i proceed

the reason i call it ''Grease-Monkey'' is because ill lack all the high tech tools needed but will be doing this build mostly by hand-as in old school

anyways heres my first bought component.

High tech tools? You mean a screwdriver? Nice radiator paint by the way.
