Default Excessive white noise

When the mic volume is set high, is it normal to hear alot of white noise in the background? You don't notice it when you're listening to music or playing games but it's very evident when the room is silent. The mic might be very sensitive but I'm not sure if it's right.

Sounds like you may have to adjust the sensitivity so it doesn't pick up background noises (e.g. ceiling fans and the like).

Which adjustment would accomplish that? Can't seem to find it.
