Corsair 500D SE - Hydro X Project

Hey guys,

 

I want to share with you my Corsair 500D SE - Hydro X Project :biggrin:

The hardware I am going to use in this project is:

 

1.CPU - 8700K

2.Motherboard: Asus maximus X hero wifi

3.GPU: EVGA RTX 2080TI XC ULTRA

4.RAM: 32GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3600

5.Case: Corsair Obsidian 500D RGB SE

6.Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 1200 P2

7.Storage: Samsung 850 EVO 250GB, Samsung 970 Evo 500 GB, Samsung 970 Evo 1 TB, Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200RPM.

 

And of course Corsair Hydro X for cooling.

 

With your permission, I will detail each stage of my build.

 

I am going to start with delidding the CPU.

 

For this task I am going to use:

 

1.ROCKIT 88 - LGA 1151/1150 Delid & Relid kit.

After successfully removing the IHS we need to clean both cpu and IHS cover from thermal paste and sealing adhesive.

Before applying the liquid metal we need to mask other areas that shouldn't be in contact with liquid metal

Applying the liquid metal both on pcb and cover. Only small drop is required.

After applying the high temperature sealant on the IHS we can attach it to the pcb.

Now I will leave it to cure and then we can test in current working PC before starting hydro x project.

After curing of almost 24 hrs, the CPU is disassembled from the jig and now we can run some tests. :biggrin:

I did a measurements of temperatures under idle conditions and stress tests.

All cores are overclocked to 4.8 GHz.

 

The temperatures before delid, while cpu is idle were: ~46C

After delid the results are amazing (exactly the same conditions and same cooler were used).

The delid was worth it and I got 20C difference. :biggrin:

You can flush your radiator using distilled water.

Mine was extremely clean.

 

** Check twice length screw before using it! Otherwise you can damage your radiator.

After choosing orientation, the pump is easily attached to bracket using thumb screws.

 

For assembling pump to radiator you must use short screws from radiator package.

 

** Check twice length screw before using it! Otherwise you can damage your radiator.

Carefully disassemble you current GPU. Mine was EVGA 2080 TI XC Ultra.

I was planning to put XG7 vertically on my case but i totally forget that my GPU having 3 slot bracket, instead two. :[pouts:

 

I ordered immediately 2 slot bracket from EVGA and unfortunately it will take some time to arrive to me.

I had two options : to continue with project or wait ~ 2 weeks till 2 slot bracket will arrive. I decided to continue as is. I can always switch configuration from normal one to vertical later.

After all components installed in the case, we can start working with hard tubing.

 

I ordered acrylic tubing 10/12 from two different manufactures: EKWB and Bitspower.

 

The Bitspower tubing quality appears to be much better. It is much clearer than EK one.

 

For hard tubing I ordered Monsoon Hardline Cutting Kit for 3/8" ID, 1/2" OD Tubing:

For this project I decided to go with Bitspower fittings. I am going to use following fitting types:

 

1. Bitspower G1/4" to Enhance Multi-Link Fitting for 12mm OD Rigid Tubing, Black Sparkle

The quality of Bitspower fittings are damn good.

 

The route is going to be:

 

Pump/Reservoir => GPU => CPU => 240mm Radiator => 360mm Radiator => Pump/Reservoir

After the system passed successfully leak test, I decided to fill it with XSPC ECX coolant (compatible according to Corsair).

 

The worst happened...:[pouts:

Some chemical reaction occurred just after a few minutes.

After contacting XSPC support I got the following answer:

That left me only one choice to ask in forums and contact corsair support.

 

c-attack confirmed he had same issue with EK cryofuel.

 

From Corsair support person I received the following answer:

 

''Thank you for contacting us and for providing detailed description of your issue with included pictures. I am really sorry you are having issues.

 

If you don't intend to dismantle your custom loop, the best solution would be to flush the original coolant from your loop first. Then fill it with distilled water and run it for a few minutes and then flush it (repeat for at least about 10 times). It is going to take a while and use about 4 liters of distilled water, but it will thoroughly clean your loop.

 

As a courtesy we will send you a replacement Hydro X Series XL5 Performance Coolant 1L — Clear which you should then use and it shouldn't cause any issues.

 

Please let me know if that works for you.

So from yesterday I am flushing my system again and again and it looks that it clear again now.

 

While I had some annoying issues with XSPC coolant I found that I need to drain and wash my system many times.

 

I designed loop with drain valve at the bottom of the loop but I also found some issues with my current set up.

 

While opening drain valve and filling port I found out that not all coolant/water is leaving the loop. Actually there are a lot of it that remains.

 

I need to check how this can be improved.

 

I am still waiting for 2 slot IO mount and Lighting node pro. I also ordered another XL5 Performance Coolant 1L.

Yesterday I received 2 slot IO mount and Lighting node pro.

Now the project can move to final stage.

I disassembled whole loop and after mounting GPU vertically, I redesigned the loop.

This is how it looks before installing lighting node pro, 3 led strips and filling it with distilled water for leakage test:

After filling with distilled water and taking almost all air out, the result looks quite good :biggrin:

No leakage were detected, system boots normally. :biggrin:

I am happy I choose Corsair components and Bitspower fittings.

 

What is left? I am still waiting for Corsair XL5 coolant to arrive and of course cable management need to be done.

Yesterday I found that inside my gpu block there are some residue. It was looking as stucked on the inner side of PMMA cover.

Although I flushed the system many times with distilled water it didn't wash it out.

I decided to disassemble gpu block and clean it.

When i disassembled it, I found some residue inside it both on pmma cover and nickeled plate.
