New AX1600i DOA?

First Blood

Recommended Posts

I have a brand new ax1600i that passes self test, but once its connected to a motherboard it shuts off after 1 second and red solid led light turns on.

Tested on 2 different brand new motherboards and same thing happens, I used 2 other evga psu's one 1300w G2 and one brand new 1600W T2 and both motherboards turn on right away.

Tried pretty much everything I could think off, with cpu, 1 stick of ram and even without cpu, no ram and same results. But with the evga psu's and bare mobo's no cpu, no ram, the mobos show error code 00 which is indicating no cpu and that mobos and evga psu's are working perfectly fine.

So I thought maybe its the 15 AMP wall socket and 1600w is exceeding this or there is some mechanism inside the AX1600i that detects some issue with the wiring or grounding, so I tested this with EVGA 1600w and no issues at all, computer is on running for hours now.

So could the AX1600i be DOA even tho it passes self test? :(

Or maybe the 24pin or 8pin mobo cables are faulty/crossed?

I am posting this in forums because customer service hasnt responded to me for 3 days so perhaps I might get a faster response from the community here. :)

Thanks!

It looks like there is issue with the entire cable set that came with this psu.

My system has been running rock solid with the EVGA 1600W T2 psu so I came with the idea to test the AX1600i EPS/CPU 8pin cable on the EVGA psu since the cables are identical. And the system will not power up! So then I used the EPS/CPU 8pin cable from EVGA psu on the AX1600i psu and it still wont turn on, meaning that the 24pin cable must also be crossed/faulty.

So could these cables be crossed or Asus mobos dont like type 4 cables?

PSU passes self test so it has to be good, and everything points now to these cables.

**DO NOT USE CABLES FROM OTHER MANUFACTURES**

Iam sure many people know but sometimes mistakes happen and you might mix up the cables. Here is some real proof and my experience from testing this out what happens.

Reason why the 8pin EPS cable from AX1600i did not work with EVGA 1600 T2 psu even tho it fit perfectly is because the internal wiring is different. So the system would not power up and my EVGA T2 1600 just auto shut off to protect itself and the components. If this was some cheap psu without proper protection then it would have been very expensive lesson.

I tested the AX1600i 8PIN EPS/CPU(Type 4) cable on my other computer that has a AX1500i which uses type 3 cables and it works perfectly fine. So that rules out my assumption that something was wrong with this cable. But still there is possibility that the 24 pin atx cable is the issue because the psu does pass self test, only fails with red light once its plugged into any motherboard and I tested it on 3 different motherboards.

Corsair customer service determined that the psu is faulty and they will just RMA it. Thanks! I am still wondering why a brand new sealed, never used psu of this calibre quality that it passed factory manufacture quality control would be DOA. I still think the psu is fine but the 24 pin atx cable is faulty as this cable has built in capacitor that could be faulty.

Hi, a little late as you already could RMA it, but this sounds similar to what i'm now experiencing with a (also brand new sealed) RM850:

my PSU only succeeds in starting up the motherboard if I leave in the paperclip used for the self test … like you said, it could very well be "cable has built in capacitor that could be faulty" (or some motherboards not reacting to it as expected)

Just RMA it dont waste time like I did. I eventually did RMA it and received a brand new one yesterday. This morning connected it to a mobo and it started right away! RMA was insanly fast, they received my broken one in the morning and shipped it in the evening! Corsair jus wow! I am really impressed. Awesome customer service!

It would have been cool if they said what was wrong with my broken psu. Guess will never know.

Good luck! my case is closed! :headbang:
