This is the first time I've heard of the metal covers coming off on the headset, so this is not normal. Should something like this happen, we do have a 2year warranty through CORSAIR as well.

Definitely not normal behavior for the headset. Have you tried connecting them to a different PC/Laptop yet? If so, I would exchange the headset for another pair, and you shouldn't have any issues.
