Question windows does not boot after ram upgrade

hello everyone,
I've just bought VS2GSDS667D2 for my toshiba tecra a8 (C2D T5500, intel 945 chipset). I installed new memory next to old one (samsung 512MB 533Mhz). Unfortunately this configuration didn't work well, linux get slow and windows xp didn't boot at all. So I removed old 512MB ram and left only new one. After that linux works very fine, however win xp still don't want to start. Windows just reboots machine after 2-3 seconds of loading BIOS recognizes all 2048MB of ram. I did memtest twice and it didn't find any bug. Windows has SP2 and all recent patches. What might be a problem?
I would appreciate quick anwser, as I need to do some work on windows this weekend.

I have seen in some laptops the Max Memory limit in Windows was set. If my assumption is accurate here's how to fix:

1. Boot in to Windows with only the original 512MB

2. In Start Menu Select Run command and type in msconfig

3. Click on the BOOT.INI TAB

4. Select Advanced Options

5. Is /MAXMEM= Checked? if so uncheck it

6. Restart and you should be able to use the 2GB module. I do not recommend mixing the original 512MB with the 2GB in the same system.

If this is not the case, check if you have the latest Bios update.

Thanks for quick response. I replaced new 2GB with original 512MB as you said, but windows still doesn't boot! Have I done sth wrong with my win? I have access to windows partition, so I found C:/boot.ini file which is:
Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /forceresetreg
I thought I could run msconfig.exe through wine but couldn't find such a program in win partition. I run cmd.exe in wine and it couldn't find msconfig either. I would like to try updating bios, but how to do this without windows?

Try this:

1. Power on laptop with no memory installed.

2. Leave the system on for 15 seconds.

3. Install the 512MB only and power on.

4. If it does not boot to Windows try booting to Safe Mode by presssing F8.

Running laptop without memory didn't help (I even increased time to about 1 minute). Safe mode doesn't work either.

typeone8,

You may want to list the notebook make and model for support.
